Book Description
A major strength of American Chemical Society (ACS) is the large number of volunteers who help to grow and sustain the organization, from local sections to technical divisions, from regional to national meetings, from task forces to national committees, and from conducting research to writing and reviewing manuscripts for journals. Some of them spend literally thousands of hours on behalf of ACS and the global chemistry enterprise, helping students or fellow scientists, organizing meetings and symposia, and reaching out to the local communities. One of the people who excelled in these efforts was the late Prof. Ernest L. Eliel. For many years he taught at the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina and was an acknowledged leader in organic stereochemistry and conformational analysis. He was also a leader at ACS, serving as ACS President in 1992 and Chair of ACS Board of Directors in 1987-89. Unfortunately Prof. Eliel died in 2008, but the ACS held a symposium in 2016 honoring his work. This book features two volumes highlighting stereochemistry and global connectivity, which represent two of the key legacies of Prof. Eliel. Because stereochemistry is a fundamental chemistry concept, ongoing research is carried out in different subfields of chemistry (such as organic, medicinal, carbohydrates, polymers), using various analytical techniques (such as NMR, X-ray crystallography, and circular dichroism). The two volumes of this book contain many research papers that represent cutting-edge research in all the above areas. Because chemistry is now a world-wide enterprise, global connectivity is important to chemistry practitioners, and the chapters on international activities should be of great interest as well.

Conformations
Author: Alan E. Tonelli
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351336223
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 237
Book Description
Among the materials found in Nature’s many diverse living organisms or produced by human industry, those made from polymers are dominant. In Nature, they are not only dominant, but they are, as well, uniquely necessary to life. Conformations: Connecting the Chemical Structures and Material Behaviors of Polymers explores how the detailed chemical structures of polymers can be characterized, how their microstructural-dependent conformational preferences can be evaluated, and how these conformational preferences can be connected to the behaviors and properties of their materials. The authors examine the connections between the microstructures of polymers and the rich variety of physical properties they evidence. Detailed polymer architectures, including the molecular bonding and geometries of backbone and side-chain groups, monomer stereo- and regiosequences, comonomer sequences, and branching, are explicitly considered in the analysis of the conformational characteristics of polymers. This valuable reference provides practicing materials engineers as well as polymer and materials science students a means of understanding the differences in behaviors and properties of materials made from chemically distinct polymers. This knowledge can assist the reader design polymers with chemical structures that lead to their desired material behaviors and properties.

Retrosynthetic Analysis and Synthesis of Natural Products 1
Author: Olivier Piva
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1786303493
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 314
Book Description
For chemists, attempting to mimic nature by synthesizing complex natural products from raw material is a challenge that is fraught with pitfalls. To tackle this unique but potentially rewarding task, researchers can rely on well-established reactions and methods of practice, or apply their own synthesis methods to verify their potential. Whatever the goal and its complexity, there are multiple ways of achieving it. We must now establish a strategic and effective plan that requires the minimum number of steps, but lends itself to widespread use. This book is structured around the study of a dozen target products (butyrolactone, macrolide, indole compound, cyclobutanic terpene, spiro- and polycyclic derivatives, etc.). For each product, the different disconnections are presented and the associated syntheses are analyzed step by step. The key reactions are described explicitly, followed by diagrams showing the range of impact of certain transformations. This set of data alone is conducive to understanding syntheses and indulging in this difficult, but worthwhile activity.

Sustainable synthesis of ciclopentene derivatives through multicomponent reactions in continuous flow regime
Author: Yoisel Bueno Broterson
Publisher: Editora Dialética
ISBN: 6527006950
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 113
Book Description
At present, a highly efficient tool for organic synthesis is the combination of organocatalytic and multicomponent processes. In the organocatalysis reaction it is possible to generate a reactive intermediate with high enantioselectivity and later, in the multicomponent stage, the complexity and structural diversity of the process increases. This strategy allows the synthesis of various analogues of optically active natural compounds and biologically relevant molecules of pharmacological interest, which are essential for human life. The current study, which is divided into three chapters, describes a methodology for the synthesis of tetrasubstituted cliclopentene derivatives from an organocatalytic reaction, followed by a multicomponent Ugi-type reaction under continuous flow regime. The use of green solvents in each reaction step, as well as the adoption of flow chemistry, led to obtaining products with high yield and enantiomerically-enriched in a fast and efficient manner, allowing the development of more sustainable strategies in synthetic chemistry.

Biological Chirality
Author: Gyula Palyi
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128123389
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 270
Book Description
Biological Chirality describes this occurrence, its history, and early research around the topic. The work covers analytical methods for observing the phenomenon, providing current techniques and practice and discussing the asymmetric morphology of certain living organisms, such as the position of the heart and liver in humans and the exceptions to biological homochirality seen in D-Amino Acids. In addition, it explores the requirement of enantioselectivity prepared pharmaceuticals to address enantioselectivities biomolecules, a major challenge in today's organic chemistry. Finally, the work considers the possible origin of biological homochirality, as well as the outlook for future research in this area. - Describes the history of biological chirality research, its possible origins, and future exploration areas - Discusses asymmetric exceptions in morphology and D-Amino Acids - Explores the critical implications of enantioselective biomolecules for preparative organic chemistry with a goal of developing effective pharmaceuticals
