Many countries that are economically dependent on the export of mineral resources experience lower than expected levels of economic and human development. This paper's objective is to expand the body of knowledge on the resource curse using a case study of Mongolia, a country newly transitioned to a market economy and democratic government. Economic, human development, and institutional quality data are used to develop our understanding of the state of Mongolia's people and economy, and the changing role of mineral resources since 1990. The brief period during which large-scale mineral development has occurred precludes a robust statistical analysis. Instead, a political economy approach is taken, examining actions of the Mongolian government in light of literature on "mechanisms by which the curse casts its spell." Mongolia is found to have taken measures to capture a greater share of mineral rents; however there is little evidence of large-scale rent seeking for personal or political gain.

Neumann and Wigen counter Euro-centrism in the study of international relations by providing a full account of political organisation in the Eurasian steppe from the fourth millennium BCE up until the present day. Drawing on a wide range of archaeological and historical secondary sources, alongside social theory, they discuss the pre-history, history and effect of what they name the 'steppe tradition'. Writing from an International Relations perspective, the authors give a full treatment of the steppe tradition's role in early European state formation, as well as explaining how politics in states like Turkey and Russia can be understood as hybridising the steppe tradition with an increasingly dominant European tradition. They show how the steppe tradition's ideas of political leadership, legitimacy and concepts of succession politics can help us to understand the policies and behaviour of such leaders as Putin in Russia and Erdogan in Turkey.

In Endgame at Stalingrad, the final volume of his acclaimed Stalingrad Trilogy, David Glantz completes his definitive account of one of World War II’s most infamous confrontations, the campaign that marked Germany’s failure on the Eastern Front and proved to be a turning point in the war. In documenting the last days of the Stalingrad campaign, in particular the Red Army’s counteroffensive known at Operation Uranus, Glantz takes on a plethora of myths and controversial questions surrounding these events, in particular, questions about why Operation Uranus succeeded and the German relief attempts failed, whether the Sixth Army could have escaped encirclement or been rescued, and who, finally was most responsible for its ultimate defeat.
