This book presents the basic fundamentals of descriptive archaeoastronomy and its application to the astronomical descriptions found in ancient Indian scriptures. Archaeoastronomy is a branch of positional astronomy that helps to determine the epochs of ancient astronomical alignments and special astronomical events. In this book, only the descriptions of special stellar alignments and events found in ancient texts can identify the antiquity of the descriptions. India possesses a large volume of ancient scriptures like Vedas and Puranas which contain many astronomical descriptions as in ancient India positional astronomy was well developed. The antiquities of these texts are determined through archaeoastronomical techniques. Major events like Mahabharata War are dated and using these dates a chronology of ancient India is determined. This book presents an in-depth study of the influence of Indian philosophical and religious thought on W.B. Yeats’s poetic and dramatic work. It traces the development of this influence and inspiration from Yeats’s early impressionistic work to the mature and elaborate incorporation of Indian ideas into the structure, themes and symbolism of his writing. It recognizes the importance of his Indian friendships, Indian essays, and shows the limits of his Indianness. While providing a comprehensive analysis of Yeats’s poetry and his bizarre poetic play, The Herne’s Egg, from an Eastern perspective, the book examines how Indian philosophical concepts guided Yeats in constructing his characters, imagery, and symbology, and in shaping the structure of his dramatic narrative. Yeats’s liminal positioning between Orientalism and Celticism, Irish nationalism and British imperialism, and his heterogenous literary aspirations and modernist poetic idiom are probed and explored in order to position him on a pendulum of postcolonial debate. The focus in this book is on the aesthetic appreciation of the parts of Yeats’s creative opus where he engaged with Eastern thought, with genuine interest and enthusiasm, when the pendulum swings towards Yeats being a mythopoetic and anticolonial writer.

In 1997, M. E. R. Mathivha, an elder of the black Jewish Lemba people of South Africa, announced to the Lemba Cultural Association that a recent DNA study substantiated their ancestral connections to Jews. Lemba people subsequently leveraged their genetic test results to seek recognition from the post-apartheid government as indigenous Africans with rights to traditional leadership and land, retheorizing genetic ancestry in the process. In Genetic Afterlives, Noah Tamarkin illustrates how Lemba people give their own meanings to the results of DNA tests and employ them to manage competing claims of Jewish ethnic and religious identity, African indigeneity, and South African citizenship. Tamarkin turns away from genetics researchers' results that defined a single story of Lemba peoples' “true” origins and toward Lemba understandings of their own genealogy as multivalent. Guided by Lemba people’s negotiations of their belonging as diasporic Jews, South African citizens, and indigenous Africans, Tamarkin considers new ways to think about belonging that can acknowledge the importance of historical and sacred ties to land without valorizing autochthony, borders, or other technologies of exclusion.
