Book Description
The mechanical behavior of a high-strength, lightweight concrete made with expanded-shale aggregate was determined in the temperature range from 23°C (73°F) to -196°C (-320°F). High-strength, lightweight concrete is of particular interest for use in offshore cryogenic containment structures in which the concrete may be subjected to low temperatures and high-intensity cyclic loading simulating 20-year stormwave action. Values of compressive strength, tensile strength, and elastic modulus were determined, with moisture content and cyclic loading serving as key parameters. An evaluation was also made of the behavior of embedded strain gages at cryogenic temperatures. The results indicate that the lightweight concrete performed favorably under the test conditions, with the mechanical properties generally increasing at low temperatures with greater gains for higher moisture contents. Cyclic loading induced relatively minor fatigue damage in the concrete and should not affect the structural performance of an offshore containment structure.

Book Description
Ocean development has conventionally been targeted at the exploitation of natural resources, however this trend is gradually changing: Ocean space has itself come to be regarded as a precious resource. Since problems associated with energy, food supply, and population will become even more crucial over the coming years, ocean space is being reevaluated as a means for providing solutions in many of these areas. The future prosperity of mankind will to a large measure be dependent on the manner in which the resources of the oceans are utilized. To develop ocean space effectively, international cooperation is essential since a global perspective is paramount. It is on this basis of cooperation and communication that the present symposium was organized, bringing together experts from all over the world to report current findings in ocean development and to consider areas of future research. The material covered here deals with all aspects of these areas which are now of such of vital importance.

Book Description
Properties of Concrete, first published in 1963, has been internationally acclaimed as the definitive work of reference on the subject for both the professional and the student engineer. The fifth edition has been updated to reflect advances in concrete technology over the past decade, yet it still retains the original aim: to provide reliable, comprehensive and practical information on the properties and use of concrete, and the selection of mix proportions all based on scientific observations and the author's extensive engineering experience. The emphasis is on understanding the behaviour of concrete and relating it to physical and chemical phenomena involved in its performance in service, so that the reader to achieve the best possible construction in concrete. Also, the scientific basis of the information provided is invaluable in planning research and in the interpretation of test results.
