Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 18: February, 1914 It was dark when the car passed through beautiful West ern North Carolina on the way to Kansas City; so the pleas ure of seeing this was postponed until the return trip. Perhaps the one thing which contributed most to this spirit was the Christian love fostered by prayer services held morning and evening on the cars. Leaders of these services impressed upon the delegates the responsibility which rested upon them as representatives at this great convention. But to come back to the journey itself, for the delegations are yet some distance from Kansas City. Very early Tuesday morning, December 30th, Danville, Kentucky, was reached. The trip following this was beautiful. The View of the coun try made lasting impressions upon the delegates. The old southern songs of Kentucky life came to the minds of all as across the blue grass country they caught glimpses of old colonial brick homesteads. About noon on the 30th, the train bearing the delegations of the two Carolinas reached Louisville. Here there was a big treat in store, for the delegates from all the Southern States were to meet and spend the afternoon. Dinner and supper were served at the beautiful new Y. M. C. A. Building, and the afternoon was spent in seeing the city. About seven o'clock all the delegates left Louisville. Now there was such a big number that a special train had to be made up. Imagine if you will a train of a dozen or more cars filled entirely with people bound for the convention. It was then that college and state spirit was at its height. Groups of people went from car to car giving yells, and singing stirring college and state songs. Every one was happy. Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 19: April, 1915 All the southern and eastern portions of our state were devoted to the production of cotton, the central to the produc tion of tobacco. The western part was so remote, because of the lack of means of transportation, that its people were more independent, raising practically everything necessary for their own personal needs. Their chief occupation was agriculture, but it was carried on differently from that in other sections of the state. They raised in small quantities almost all crops, but especially small grains. Only the crudest farm implements were used, because the slaves were not capable of handling improved machinery, and the landlord, so long as he could have his work done, did not see any need of working himself in order that he might use improved implements. Much cot ton and tobacco were at this early date shipped from North Carolina. But after the War Between the States we note quite a change in the industrial development of North Carolina. Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 19: November, 1914 These early settlers soon found themselves having trouble with the Indians. The French and the English were fighting to decide which of the two should hold the North American Continent. The French established a cordon of forts which extended from Canada to the Ohio River, made friends of the Indians and were so successful in arousing their enmity against the English that it became proper at an early period to adopt measures for securing the friendship or assistance of the Indians who bordered on North Carolina. Until tampered with by the French, the Cherokees and Catawbas were not hostile to the English settlers, but were rather friendly dis posed toward them. In June, 1753, Matthew Rowan, president of the council, said: There are in the up-country at least three thousand fighting men, for the most part scotch-irish and Germans, and steadily increasing. The Indians were constantly bothering these people, murdering somebody occasionally, and stealing continually - the Cherokees killed and the Catawbas stole. In this same month three French and five Northward Indians met and fought thirteen Catawba Indians within less than two miles of Salisbury during the session of the court.
