Examining the history of altar decorations, this study of the visual liturgy grapples with many of the previous theoretical frameworks to reveal the evolution and function of these ritual objects. This volume reframes the development of US-American avant-garde art of the long 1960s—from minimal and pop art to land art, conceptual art, site-specific practices, and feminist art—in the context of contemporary architectural discourses. Susanneh Bieber analyzes the work of seven major artists, Donald Judd, Robert Grosvenor, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Smithson, Lawrence Weiner, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Mary Miss, who were closely associated with the formal-aesthetic innovations of the period. While these individual artists came to represent diverse movements, Bieber argues that all of them were attracted to the field of architecture—the work of architects, engineers, preservationists, landscape designers, and urban planners—because they believed these practices more directly shaped the social and material spaces of everyday life. This book’s contribution to the field of art history is thus twofold. First, it shows that the avant-garde of the long 1960s did not simply develop according to an internal logic of art but also as part of broader sociocultural discourses about buildings and cities. Ono examines cross-cultural artistic exchange between the West and Japan from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Studies of Japonisme have been dominated by searching out relationships of influence between artworks–trying to identify which specific works influenced a particular artist. Ono argues that a more holistic understanding of 'spillover effects' is necessary in fully comprehending the nuances of these relationships. She bases this argument on documents and works of art in the context of globalisation, looking at the relationships between James McNeill Whistler and others with their contemporaries in the Japanese artistic and literary worlds. This was a more complex two-way exchange than is often appreciated, with Western artists taking inspiration from (to them) new Japanese styles, while Japanese artists and writers were trying to craft a 'modern', more western-influences style to reflect the modern nation of Japan emerging onto the world stage after centuries of relative isolation. This book examines the terms upon which painting in the United States sought to negotiate with the legacy of American formalist aesthetics and by extension, the understanding of modernist painting it had become most readily associated with. In so doing, a separate set of possibilities for painting gradually began to emerge. The salient debates and practices that collectively worked to establish such a response are approached through the philosopher Gianni Vattimo’s idea of pensiero debole or so-called weak thought. To this end, the proposed study both identifies and seeks to examine a type of "weak" painting which, like Vattimo’s idea, took as its critical point of departure “the exhaustion – but not the vanishing – of the project of modernism (the belief in reason, progress, history, the nation-state, etc.).” Craig Staff explores particular instances wherein artists sought to extend the parameters of the object beyond what had been called into question, namely the proclivity for modernist painting’s "strength" to be understood as denoting, amongst other things, a perceived set of universal essences.
