At the heart of this study is a biblical-theological approach to central passages on intercessory prayers in the OT. After examining these largely prophetic prayer dialogues, Widmer argues that they provide an important key to biblical theology and spirituality. Furthermore, a close reading of prayers by Abraham, Moses, Samuel, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joel, and Amos reveals fascinating insights into the portrayals of these characters and confirms strong conceptual associations with Moses, Israel’s archetypal mediator. Widmer reads these prayers in both their immediate literary and wider canonical contexts. The ultimate aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the God whom the church worships and confesses to be the Father of Jesus Christ. Particularly pertinent is the finding that many OT prayers interact with God’s nature as revealed to Moses in Exod 34:6–7. Yhwh’s fullest revelation is also given in the context of an intercessory prayer. Widmer argues that intercessory prayer and theology have a hermeneutical-spiral relationship, mutually informing and correcting each other. It is in engaging with a loving and holy God that the phenomenon of divine mutability must be understood. Overall, Standing in the Breach suggests that fundamental biblical themes such as God’s mercy and judgment, divine retribution and forgiveness, covenant mediation, substitutionary suffering and atonement, and eventually the dynamics of the cross are all intrinsically related to and illuminated by prophetic OT intercessory prayers.

Judicial acts of states are becoming increasingly subjected to international investment claims. This book focuses on distinctive particularities of these claims. Although there are no special responsibility regimes for different functions of the state, the application of investment treaty standards and the threshold for their breach may vary depending on the function involved. Accordingly, in order for the state to incur responsibility for a wrongful act committed in the exercise of its judicial function, there are some specific conditions that should be met: the investor must establish that the state is responsible for a breach attributable to the state; the investment tribunal has jurisdiction over the particular dispute; and the damage that the investor has suffered is a result of the particular breach. This book constructs a framework which allows a greater understanding of domestic causes of action for breaches of human rights sounding in a monetary remedy. The first part describes the cause of action in three jurisdictions: the United States of America, India and New Zealand. The second part discusses two insights resulting from a comparative analysis of these three jurisdictions. The first is a list of four common questions that, when answered, structure the cause of action. These questions address what the cause of action protects, who the cause of action protects, against whom the cause of action is directed, and what the court orders. The second is a list of four overarching influences that affected the answers given to those questions in the three jurisdictions, so completing the structure of the causes of action. These influences are the cause of action's source, age, wider context and internal context. Putting these two chapters together provides a generalised outline of the causes of action. In the third part of the book the analysis is turned around. The generalised framework is assessed as a way in which to categorise the development and shape of the cause of action in England under the Human Rights Act 1998. The book concludes that a generic structure of the cause of action is common to the three jurisdictions studied and that the differences between the jurisdictions can be explained by influences that affect the causes of action in different ways. Further, this generalised framework is of relevance beyond the three jurisdictions from which it was drawn; it can be used as a guide by other jurisdictions in which such a cause of action either exists or will develop in the future.
