Book Description
In the context of sports leagues scheduling (SLS) several groups' interests must be taken into account. This book treats requirements for sport leagues schedules to be realizable from an operational and a security point of view, attractive for spectators and TV channels, and fair for the competing teams. Formal problem definitions as well as integer programming models are presented and analyzed.

Book Description
Sports world is full of arguments. Even before the ball is played, there are questions. Why team A plays team B on Christmas? Why team D travels so much? Almost every fan has complained his or her team had played an unfavorable schedule. It is not easy to answer these questions. The large amount of constraints makes sports league scheduling a very complex problem. In the last thirty years, there has been many researches conducted on this problem. Most of them focus on the time constrained round robin tournament, which is used by many college sports leagues and most professional soccer leagues. There are few researches focus on the time relaxed round robin tournament, which is used by National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, and many amateur leagues. This book is the first ever to systematically investigate time relaxed round robin tournament scheduling problem. It consists of three major parts: the properties of general time-relaxed round robin tournaments; traveling distance problem in the time constrained conditions, all major constraints for the NBA regular season scheduling.

Book Description
Scheduling problems have been investigated since the late ?fties. Two types of applications have mainly motivated research in this area: project planning and machine scheduling. While in machine scheduling a large number of speci?c scheduling situations depending on the machine environment and the job c- racteristicshavebeenconsidered, theearlyworkinprojectplanninginvestigated scheduling situations with precedence constraints between activities assuming that su?cient resources are available to perform the activities. More recently, in project scheduling scarce resources have been taken into account leading to so-called resource-constrained project scheduling problems. On the other hand, also in machine scheduling more general and complex problems have been - vestigated. Due to these developments today both areas are much closer to each other. Furthermore, applications like timetabling, rostering or industrial scheduling are connected to both areas. This book deals with such complex scheduling problems and methods to solve them. It consists of three parts: The ?rst part (Chapters 1 and 2) contains a description of basic scheduling models with applications and an introduction into discrete optimization (covering complexity, shortest path algorithms, linear programming, network ?ow algorithms and general optimization methods). In the second part (Chapter 3) resource-constrained project scheduling problems are considered. Especially, methods like constraint propagation, branch-a- bound algorithms and heuristic procedures are described. Furthermore, lower bounds and general objective functions are discussed.

Book Description
This book introduces solutions for sports scheduling problems in a variety of settings. In particular the book covers timetabling, the traveling tournament problem, carryover minimization, breaks minimization, tournament design, tournament planning, and referee assignment. A rich selection of applications to sports such as football, baseball, basketball, cricket or hockey are employed to illustrate the methods and techniques. In a step-by-step tutorial format the book describes the use of graph theory concepts, local search operators and integer programming in the context of sports scheduling. The methods presented in this book are essential to sports scheduling in all its dimensions, from tournaments that are followed by millions of people across the world, with broadcast rights that amount to hundreds of millions of dollars in some competitions, to amateur leagues that require coordination and logistical efforts due to the large number of tournaments and competitors.

Book Description
Any sports league needs a schedule of play, and such a schedule can be important, as it may influence the outcome of the sports competition itself and since it may have an impact on the interests of all parties involved. As in many other sports leagues and countries, the interest for Belgian soccer has increased over the last years. This paper describes our experiences in scheduling the highest Belgian soccer league. We describe how we automated and improved the way in which the calendar is constructed, resulting in the schedule for the season 2006-2007. We also explain how decomposing the scheduling problem into two subproblems resulted in a further improvement. The resulting calendar has been accepted for the season 2007-2008. Finally, we compare the quality of the schedules resulting from the different methods.

Book Description
The mathematics of tournament design are surprisingly subtle, and this book, an extensively revised version of Ellis Horwood's popular Combinatorial Designs: Construction Methods, provides a thorough introduction. It includes a new chapter on league schedules, which discusses round robin tournaments, venue sequences, and carry-over effects. It also discusses balanced tournament designs, double schedules, and bridge and whist tournament design. Readable and authoritative, the book emphasizes throughout the historical development of the material and includes numerous examples and exercises giving detailed constructions.

Book Description
An athletic game scheduling (AGS) problem can be formulated using 0-1 integer program with minor constraints and can be solved partially using traditional operations research methods. However, the constraints that each team and the league requested of the AGS scheduler make the problem no longer practical by typical operations research methods. In most real world problems, many constraints cannot be formulated into mathematical forms. We, therefore, developed heuristic algorithms that can generate reasonably good solutions in a short period. In this research, we propose two algorithms, multi echelon simulated annealing and multi echelon tabu search. In the beginning of the research, our research was concentrated on developing and defining general athletic game scheduling problems that can solve schedules for every athletic league with minor changes. We developed a schedule for year 2000 for the Southern League Baseball, an AA minor league. The procedures of this development process are provided. Finally, an A/B/C/D/E format is defined to determine the different types of AGS problems depending on these characteristics: the number of meetings between two teams, the number of divisions in the league, the availability of fixed time slots, and the number of teams in each division.
