Sensation is the subject of a burgeoning field in the humanities. This volume examines its role in the religious changes and transformations of early modern Europe. Sensation was not only central to the doctrinal disputes of the Reformation, but also critical in shaping new or reformed devotional practices. Recent scholarship has shown that modern postural yoga is the outcome of a complex process of transcultural exchange and syncretism. This book doubles down on those claims and digs even deeper, looking to uncover the disparate but entangled roots of modern yoga practice. Anya Foxen shows that some of what we call yoga, especially in North America and Europe, is genealogically only slightly related to pre-modern Indian yoga traditions. Rather, it is equally, if not more so, grounded in Hellenistic theories of the subtle body, Western esotericism and magic, pre-modern European medicine, and late-nineteenth-century women's wellness programs. The book begins by examining concepts arising out of Greek philosophy and religion, including Pythagoreanism, Stoicism, Neo-Platonism, Galenic medicine, theurgy, and other cultural currents that have traditionally been categorized as "Western esotericism," as well as the more recent examples which scholars of American traditions have labeled "metaphysical religion." Marshaling these under the umbrella category of "harmonialism," Foxen argues that they represent a history of practices that were gradually subsumed into the language of yoga. Orientalism and gender become important categories of analysis as this narrative moves into the nineteenth century. Women considerably outnumber men in all studies of yoga except those conducted in India, and modern anglophone yoga exhibits important continuities with women's physical culture, feminist reform, and white women's engagement with Orientalism. Foxen's study allows us to recontextualize the peculiarities of American yoga--its focus on aesthetic representation, its privileging of bodily posture and unsystematic incorporation of breathwork, and above all its overwhelmingly white female demographic. In this context it addresses the ongoing conversation about cultural appropriation within the yoga community.

How did the early-modern Christian West conceive of the spaces and times of the afterlife? The answer to this question is not obvious for a period that saw profound changes in theology, when the telescope revealed the heavens to be as changeable and imperfect as the earth, and when archaeological and geological investigations made the earth and what lies beneath it another privileged site for the acquisition of new knowledge. This study takes a fresh look at the abundant scenarios of disguise in early modern prose fiction and suggests reading them in the light of the contemporary religio-political developments. More specifically, it argues that Elizabethan narratives adopt aspects of the heated Eucharist debate during the Reformation, including officially renounced notions like transubstantiation, to negotiate culturally pressing concerns regarding identity change. Drawing on the rich field of research on the adaptation of pre-Reformation concerns in Anglican England, the book traces a cross-fertilisation between the Reformation and the literary mode of romance. The study brings together topics which are currently being strongly debated in early modern studies: the turn to religion, a renewed interest in aesthetics, and a growing engagement with prose fiction. The development of a coherent, cohesive visual system of mathematics brought about a seminal shift in approaches towards abstract thinking in western Europe. Vernacular translations of Euclid’s Elements made these new and developing approaches available to a far broader readership than had previously been possible. Scholarship has explored the way that the language of mathematics leaked into the literary cultures of England and the Low Countries, but until now the role of visual metaphors of making and shaping in the establishment of mathematics as a practical tool has gone unexplored. Mathematics and the Craft of Thought sheds light on the remarkable culture shift surrounding the vernacular language translations of Euclid, and the geometrical imaginary that they sought to create. It shows how the visual language of early modern European geometry was constructed by borrowing and quoting from contemporary visual culture. The verbal and visual language of this form of mathematics, far from being simply immaterial, was designed to tantalize with material connotations. This book argues that, in a very real sense, practical geometry in this period was built out of craft metaphors.

False relations remain one of the great enigmas of English Renaissance musical culture. Contemporary theoretical treatises explicitly discouraged their use, and yet these deliberate dissonances are hallmarks of English Renaissance music. Over the centuries they have accumulated a surfeit of subsequent connotations that have obscured how they once functioned, yet they have never been fully critically explored or elucidated in an English context. In Syrene Soundes, author Eleanor Chan excavates beneath strata of accumulated meanings to uncover the way that false relations delighted and confounded their original listeners and performers. The book offers a holistic investigation of the false relations phenomenon, examining the cultural, literary, visual, and material understanding of such dissonances in relation to the broader culture of incongruity, surprise and error, and metaphors of harmony that captured the imagination of the English in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Chan argues that interdisciplinary angles can galvanise understanding of technical musical theoretical tropes like the false relation. She demonstrates that the false relation and its graphic ephemerality can productively be explored through the lens of English Renaissance visual culture and its idiosyncratic representational strategies. By anchoring it within the milieu of the English Reformation, burgeoning aspirations towards empire, and the increasing need for a self-fashioned collective English identity, Chan reveals that the false relation was key to the mythology of an inherited English tradition of music-making. Syrene Soundes concerns itself not just with the notes on the page, but with the way that they influenced the broader culture of the time, both as the performable music they represented, as the idea of music, and as the visual, inky marks they are made of. It provides an accessible introduction to false relations which will be of use to musicologists and non-music specialists alike. Ultimately, Chan argues for the value of integrated interdisciplinary analysis in exploring the musical culture of the English Renaissance and embraces the blurring of musical, visual, material, and literary forms of expression that fed contemporary understanding of music, harmony, and falseness.
