Book Description
Spelling Notebook Nowhere else will you find a ‘kinesthetic learning’ notebook that helps students like this does! Is your student/child using a notebook off the shelf of an office supply store? If so, you’re missing a tremendous opportunity for student achievement and recognition. The book that a student uses to craft letters and words, to express him or herself in the beautiful, powerful English language, to record their progress and to expand their knowledge, should be – and can be – much more that the pretty cover the student chooses off the shelf. A rich learning ground, a child’s spelling notebook should also be much more than lines on paper. It should perform as hard as your students do. True to form, the YesPhonics™ Spelling Notebook becomes a educational companion, a living document, a forum for expanding knowledge, and a permanent record of the 1,300 most commonly used words in the English language. And you won’t find it anywhere other than the YesPhonics Express program.Technically designed for kinesthetic learning (tactile doing rather than seeing or hearing), the Spelling Notebook, works in synch with the other YesPhonics activities, and engages students in deeper phonics learning. Led by the unique YesPhonics manual and phonics worksheets, students copy words, construct sentences, “decode” words with spelling rules and work markings, increase vocabulary, and watch their knowledge sprout and grow. Hand in glove, they learn how to read as they learn how to spell. Engage With the Page One of the most important aspects of the custom notebook from YesPhonics is that it utilizes 3/8″ lines with a dashed line in the center. With this format, students can easily locate the proper spacing needed to perfectly form the written letters. The Spelling Notebook was also designed with young students in mind – those with small hands and developing mechanical skills. The specific technical aspects of the YesPhonics Spelling Notebook were strategically developed to accommodate the early learning of children and their specific writing style and challenges. Lines Done Right The YesPhonics Spelling Notebook is perfect for learning the proper proportions of manuscript writing and cursive writing as well. As part of a comprehensive phonics program, students learn how to write in the Spelling Notebook. YesPhonics has created a unique Circle Point Chart that teaches the seven strokes of manuscript writing in a format designed to accommodate the motor skills of growing children. Learning to write is a major achievement for young students, one which they can be proud of – and increasingly proud of – as their skills develop and expand. What a first glance seem like a simple, blank, lined collection of pages becomes – with the students’ increasing skills and cognitive learning – the slate where he or she learns to express his or her thoughts and imagination. Igniting a lifetime of learning and expression, the blank pages become the canvas of a student’s words, thoughts, emotions and highest articulation. A Canvas for Learning The YesPhonics Spelling Notebook serves as a permanent record of achievement and source of pride and satisfaction for the aspiring student, their teachers, and their parents.

Book Description
It is a little known fact that reading was taught by means of spelling for over 200 years. Today the impact of spelling on reading achievement is not as well appreciated as it once was. The late Dr. Ronald P. Carver did extensive research into the causal relationships between spelling instruction and reading ability. Carver concluded, "One very important way to learn how to pronounce more words accurately is sometimes overlooked, that is, learning to spell more words accurately." (Causes of High and Low Reading Achievement, p. 178). He also notes that "spelling was used to teach reading for almost 200 years, but by the beginning of the 20th century, the tide had so turned that learning to spell was largely seen as incidental to learning to read." Quoting C. A. Perfetti, Carver observed, "practice at spelling should help reading more than practice of reading helps spelling." (p. 179. In June of 2004 Miss Geraldine Rodgers sent me her essay, "Why Noah Webster's Way Was the Right Way." She argued from the history of reading and the psychology of reading that Webster's spelling book method of teaching reading and spelling was superior to all other methods. I was surprised to learn that that Webster, in his 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language, defined a Spelling Book as, " A book for teaching children to spell and read." He also wrote under the entry, Spelling, "To tell the name of letters of a word, with a proper division of syllables, for the purpose of learning the pronunciation. In this manner children learn to read by first spelling the words." You can see that Webster was quite clear about the dual purpose of the spelling books in his day. You can imagine my surprise at the improvement I began to get with my tutoring students when they started working through Webster's Spelling Book. I decided to type up my own edition to use in my private tutoring and my tutoring work at the Odessa Christian School in Odessa, TX, where I teach remedial reading and Spanish. In this edition, I have retained everything in the original 1908 (descendant from the 1829 edition). The only differences relate to formatting. I chose to list the words in rows instead of columns. I also allow the words to divide at the ends of lines. I have found that this works fine for all students. We are teaching students to read and spell by syllables and not by word shapes or context. When reading and spelling are taught by the Spelling Book Method, all guessing at words from shape or context is completely eliminated. The student's total focus is on pronouncing the words correctly, high levels of comprehension are a natural result.

Book Description
The friendliest way to inspire your kids to take notes and master their spelling! This "My Personal Spelling Dictionary Logbook: The Notebook for Kids' Collection of Their Hard Words to Spell, for Spelling Practice & Enhancing Word Power!" comes with 220 wide ruled pages for kids to write in the words they found challenging, either in their daily life or classrooms. Each page pair comes with a big alphabet (in dictionary-like format) that signifies the letter with which the words inside the pages start. Due to its size of 6 x 9 inches, kids can carry this personal dictionary logbook along anywhere they want and well keep up with the vocabulary they want to master! In addition to the over two hundred blank dictionary-like pages inside, the very first page of this book is the owner's page where kids can write their own name, making this spelling dictionary truly personal, and also making the book great as gifts for children of any age. Followed by the lists of Top 20 hardest words, and Top 20 most favorite words, (of their own) which will definitely add fun to children's vocabulary learning experience. The last couple pages are intentionally reserved unlined, so children can give illustrations to some words in their own terms, which is a great way to help them deal with those more challenging words! The pages are bound by the book industry standard binding (the same binding as most paperbacks in the library) and the book covers are laminated with matte finish that helps repel liquid and toughens the cover, so that this one-and-only personal dictionary may keep the vocabulary collection with you and your little child longer. Plus, the book cover and the spine is writable, so, once this book is used up, kids can simply write its subject and volume number, then continue on the next "My Personal Spelling Dictionary Logbook" (available on leading on-line and brick-and-mortar bookstores) to continue the compilation they are proud of, without any disruption! Now with this book, your children can be friends with any words they found challenging, and continuously building on their vocabulary effortlessly, through the semester and beyond!
