Selective Population of High-j States Via Heavy-ion-induced Transfer Reactions

Book Description
One of the early hopes of heavy-ion-induced transfer reactions was to populate states not seen easily or at all by other means. To date, however, I believe it is fair to say that spectroscopic studies of previously unknown states have had, at best, limited success. Despite the early demonstration of selectivity with cluster transfer to high-lying states in light nuclei, the study of heavy-ion-induced transfer reactions has emphasized the reaction mechanism. The value of using two of these reactions for spectroscopy of high spin states is demonstrated: 143Nd(16O, 15O) 144Nd and 17°Er(16O, 15O.gamma.) 171Er. (WHK).

Book Description
By selectively choosing the appropriate heavy ion transfer reaction one can access high spin states. As a demonstration of the technique two proton and two neutron states of high spin (both yrast and non-yrast) in Nd nuclei have been identified. These spectroscopic results have yielded the first direct information about the configuration of some of these states. 11 refs., 6 figs. (WRF).

Perspectives In Heavy Ion Physics - Proceedings Of The 3rd Japan-italy Joint Symposium '97
Author: Cosimo Signorini
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814544590
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
These proceedings present the most recent progress made by Japanese and Italian researchers in the field of heavy ion physics. They cover both experimental and theoretical aspects from low energies (Tandem Van de Graaff accelerators) to medium energies (LINAC, Cyclotrons) up to relativistic energies (LHC at CERN).The majority of the experiments presented have been performed in the two largest Italian laboratories: LNL, Legnaro-Padova, with the Tandem + SC Linac (ALPI); LNS, Catania, with the Tandem + SC Cyclotron; and in one of the largest Japanese facilities: RIKEN, Saitama, with the Ring Cyclotron. The future Italian developments with relativistic heavy ions at LHC (CERN) are also presented, as well as experiments in collaboration with other laboratories, like JAERI, CNS (University of Tokyo), the Tandem Accelerator Center (Tsukuba), GANIL (France), and the Accelerator Laboratory in Munich, Germany. The highlights of the proceedings, and the area in which most experimental efforts are presently involved, are: research with radioactive ion beams at RIKEN with the RIPS separator; spectroscopy study at LNL with the GASP/EUROBALL 4πγ spectrometers; and intermediate energy hysics (deep inelastic, fragmentation) at LNS.Also presented are the future trends in Japan at RIKEN, RiBeam Factory, and JHP at KEK, and in Italy EXCYT at LNS and SPES at LNL. All these new developments are strongly connected with production and subsequent exploitation of radioactive ion beams, and offer a very promising, fertile future.

Nuclear Spectroscopy and Reactions 40-B
Author: Joseph Cerny
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323142885
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 732
Book Description
Nuclear Spectroscopy and Reactions, Part B covers information regarding the development of nuclear spectroscopy and its reactions, while emphasizing in-beam spectroscopy. This part specifically covers charged particle spectroscopy, spectroscopy from meson-induced reactions, and neutron spectroscopy. Organized into three sections, this book first discusses charged particle spectroscopy, which includes resonance reaction, reactions involving light ions, heavy-ion-induced reaction, and specialized reaction. The next section reviews spectroscopy from meson-induced reactions, including muonic and hadronic atoms; radiative capture; and charge exchange, scattering, and direct reactions. The final section discusses neutron spectroscopy, which includes advances in measurement of neutron spectra, charge exchange reactions, and polarization phenomena. This book is written to primarily benefit graduate students who are engaged in research that concerns nuclear spectroscopy.
