Associative Learning and Representation: an EPS Workshop for N. J. Mackintosh
Author: Anthony Dickinson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 9781138883284
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
The papers published in this Special Issue of The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Section B, are based upon presentations at a workshop on "Associative Learning and Representation" which was sponsored by the Experimental Psychology Society at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The Workshop celebrated the contribution of Professor Nicholas Mackintosh to animal learning and conditioning in particular and experimental psychology in general in the year of his retirement from the Chair of Psychology at the University of Cambridge. The papers collected here focus on issues that are of relevance to learning in both humans and other animals, being particularly concerned with the nature of representation and how representations are developed and deployed. The topics addressed included stimulus representation and perceptual learning, discrimination learning, learned irrelevance, retrospective revaluation, discriminative control, and spatial learning.

Multistrategy Learning
Author: Ryszard S. Michalski
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461532027
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 156
Book Description
Most machine learning research has been concerned with the development of systems that implememnt one type of inference within a single representational paradigm. Such systems, which can be called monostrategy learning systems, include those for empirical induction of decision trees or rules, explanation-based generalization, neural net learning from examples, genetic algorithm-based learning, and others. Monostrategy learning systems can be very effective and useful if learning problems to which they are applied are sufficiently narrowly defined. Many real-world applications, however, pose learning problems that go beyond the capability of monostrategy learning methods. In view of this, recent years have witnessed a growing interest in developing multistrategy systems, which integrate two or more inference types and/or paradigms within one learning system. Such multistrategy systems take advantage of the complementarity of different inference types or representational mechanisms. Therefore, they have a potential to be more versatile and more powerful than monostrategy systems. On the other hand, due to their greater complexity, their development is significantly more difficult and represents a new great challenge to the machine learning community. Multistrategy Learning contains contributions characteristic of the current research in this area.

Theoretical and Computational Models of Word Learning: Trends in Psychology and Artificial Intelligence
Author: Gogate, Lakshmi
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1466629746
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 451
Book Description
The process of learning words and languages may seem like an instinctual trait, inherent to nearly all humans from a young age. However, a vast range of complex research and information exists in detailing the complexities of the process of word learning. Theoretical and Computational Models of Word Learning: Trends in Psychology and Artificial Intelligence strives to combine cross-disciplinary research into one comprehensive volume to help readers gain a fuller understanding of the developmental processes and influences that makeup the progression of word learning. Blending together developmental psychology and artificial intelligence, this publication is intended for researchers, practitioners, and educators who are interested in language learning and its development as well as computational models formed from these specific areas of research.

Shared Representations
Author: Sukhvinder S. Obhi
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316797201
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 699
Book Description
Socially situated thought and behaviour are pervasive and vitally important in human society. The social brain has become a focus of study for researchers in the neurosciences, psychology, biology and other areas of behavioural science, and it is becoming increasingly clear that social behaviour is heavily dependent on shared representations. Any social activity, from a simple conversation to a well-drilled military exercise to an exquisitely perfected dance routine, involves information sharing between the brains of those involved. This volume comprises a collection of cutting-edge essays centred on the idea of shared representations, broadly defined. Featuring contributions from established world leaders in their fields and written in a simultaneously accessible and detailed style, this is an invaluable resource for established researchers and those who are new to the field.
