What exactly is spatial inequality? Why does it matter? And what should be the policy response to it? These questions have become important in recent years as the spatial dimensions of inequality have begun to attract considerable policy interest. In China, Russia, India, Mexico, and South Africa, as well as most other developing and transition economies, spatial and regional inequality - of economic activity, incomes, and social indicators - is on the increase. Spatial inequality is a dimension of overall inequality, but it has added significance when spatial and regional divisions align with political and ethnic tensions to undermine social and political stability. Also important in the policy debate is a perceived sense that increasing internal spatial inequality is related to greater openness of economies, and to globalization in general. Despite these important concerns, there is remarkably little systematic documentation of what has happened to spatial and regional inequality over the last twenty years. Correspondingly, there is insufficient understanding of the determinants of internal spatial inequality. This volume attempts to answer the questions posed above, drawing on data from twenty-five countries from all regions of the world. They bring together perspectives and expertise in development economics and in economic geography and form a well-researched introduction to an area of growing analytical and policy importance.

Inequality between urban and rural areas is increasing in the recent past in almost all the developing countries. The contribution of the household characteristics for the generation of spatial inequality is widely discussed in the inequality literature while the effect of the area where the people live in is rarely discussed. This study analyses the urban rural inequality in Sri Lanka, using household consumption expenditure as a proxy measure of household welfare by applying a quantile regression decomposition technique. Spatial inequality is decomposed into two segments i.e. inequality that is due to the differences in household characteristics and the inequality that is due to the location specific returns to these characteristics, using both Machado-Mata and Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition techniques. Differences in location specific returns to the household characteristics matter more than the differences in household characteristics in determining the consumption level of the households. This study may be helpful for students, researchers and policy makers interested either in spatial inequality or inequality decomposition.

Various education finance and taxation reforms in the past several decades have substantially changed China's system for funding basic education, but the present system is still characterized by insufficient funding and large inequalities across localities. Using data of more than 2000 county-level units all over the country during 1998-2005, this study uses Theil index to spatially decompose the pattern of funding inequality in China's basic education across four geographic and administrative levels. The analysis shows that the level of inequality remained high after the rural taxation and education finance reforms since 2000, despite the efforts to increase education-purpose fiscal transfers to local governments, and that the gaps are especially severe across provinces in the same region and across prefectures in the same province.

This paper studies the spatial distribution of household income inequality across 722 U.S. local labor markets--or Commuting Zones--from 2005-2019. The Theil index, its within and between components, and the decomposition of the within component into a shared and differentiated structure are estimated using the American Community Survey. Inequality increased in 72% of CZs. The dynamics within markets drive the rising income inequality pattern due to high accumulation of income in specific CZs. One-fourth of inequality comes from the shared distribution and two-fifths from the differentiated. New York and DC are the labor markets with the highest positive contribution to inequality. San Francisco's, San Jose's, and Seattle also contributed to overall inequality in the last few years. CZs with a lower share of income than households tend to be touristic, formerly industrial, or border labor markets. Texas and Oregon displayed an attractive reduction of income inequality in many of their CZs.
