In the decades of the Cold War before glasnost and perestroika, dissident Soviet artists produced a dramatic, vital body of art - work that was forbidden and secret, but that survived and flourished despite persecution. Artists risked personal safety, imprisonment, and exile in their quest for individual expression. In opposition to the government-prescribed patriotic style of Socialist Realism, these "unofficial" artists worked in prohibited styles - abstraction, Surrealism, Expressionism, Photorealism, and Conceptualism - and depicted forbidden subject matter concerned with politics, religion, and eroticism. Until glasnost and the end of the Soviet Union, few people were familiar with the richness of this art; now the full story can be told. During the thirty-year Cold War period, Norton Dodge, Professor Emeritus of Economics at St. Mary's College of Maryland, amassed a collection of approximately 10,000 works of art by more than 900 Soviet artists. Published in collaboration with the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, which now houses the collection, this book reproduces a selection of these remarkable works in a wide range of media including paintings, sculpture, photography, works on paper, banners, and performance art. Among the artists represented are Grisha Bruskin, Eric Bulatov, Mikhail Chemiakin, Ilya Kabakov, Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid, Leonid Lamm, Lydia Masterkova, Ernst Neizvestny, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Oscar Rabin, Evgenii Rukhin, and Oleg Tselkov. The book identifies a transnational undertaking that reinforced détente, dialogue, and cultural transfer, and thus counterbalanced the persistent belief in Europe's irreversible division. It analyzes a cultural practice that attracted extensive attention during the Cold War but has largely been ignored in recent scholarship: tamizdat, or the unauthorized migration of underground literature across the Iron Curtain. Through this cultural practice, I offer a new reading of Cold War Europe's history . Investigating the transfer of underground literature from the 'Other Europe' to Western Europe, the United States, and back illuminates the intertwined fabrics of Cold War literary cultures. Perceiving tamizdat as both a literary and a social phenomenon, the book focuses on how individuals participated in this border-crossing activity and used secretive channels to guarantee the free flow of literature.

Soviet Belarus has been often referred to as the most loyal of all Soviet republics, where there was no protest and no sign of nonconformism appeared. This image persisted well into the next decades, when Socialism collapsed, the independent state of Belarus arose, and the impulse of democratic development was once again endangered by the establishment of authoritarianism. This book focuses on the dissent ideas that circulated in the milieu of the Belarusian Soviet Intelligentsia both in samizdat (uncensored) and in the officially published literature. It argues that the latter was not less crucial for the transmission of the unconventional images of culture and identity than the former. These ideas forewent the unprecedented rise of the cultural and political life in the late 1980s-early 1990s, which had been often overshadowed by the further downfall. The timeframe of the study lies between 1968, when the events of the Prague Spring and its violent suppression altered the intellectuals' perception of themselves and of the Socialist order and 1988, when, on the eve of the Autumn of Nations in Eastern and Central Europe, the intellectual dissent in the BSSR melted into political protest. Which were the conditions of the rise and existence of nonconformism of the intelligentsia in the generally conformist society? How and by which instruments the samizdat publishing functioned, how and to which extent the exchange of ideas took place? And finally, how the Belarusian intelligentsia responded to the challenges of writing and thinking within the Socialist system? These questions are central to the book.
