Book Description
The fall of apartheid in South Africa and post-cold war international development changed the preconditions for regionalization in southern Africa. From being used as an instrument in the overlaying conflict between apartheid South Africa and the rest of the region, it can now be constructively used to improve regional development. This study examines a number of decisive factors for future southern African regionalization. One of its conclusions is that the process will mainly be spontaneous, rather than politically guided. Functional integration in sectors like hydropower, water management, transport, and communication is easier to envisage than traditional trade integration. Investments rather than trade will be the driving force. Threats to the three main interrelated components of a positive scenario for the region -- high economic growth, political stability, and absence of major armed conflicts between and within the countries -- are analyzed. The risk that regionalization by default may lead to enclaves of growth and wealth in a sea of poverty is noted.

Author: Norbert Edomah
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1789852374
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 262
Book Description
Regional development is a broad term but can be seen as a general effort to reduce regional disparities by supporting (employment and wealth-generating) economic activities in regions. In the past, regional development policy tended to try to achieve these objectives by means of large-scale infrastructure development and by attracting inward investment” (OECD, 2014).A territorial and regional approach to development is crucial in addressing regional challenges, regional economic competitiveness, and reducing socio-economic discrepancies. This book provides a forum to articulate and discuss Africa’s regional development issues in view of the rising opportunities within the African region. This volume contains 14 chapters and is organized in four sections: Introduction; Industry, Trade and Investment in Africa; Agricultural Services and the Water-energy-food Nexus in Africa; and Environmental and Cultural Dimensions to Africa’s Regional Development.

Land Reform Under Structural Adjustment in Zimbabwe
Author: Sam Moyo
Publisher: Nordic Africa Institute
ISBN: 9789171064578
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
This study represents a first systematic effort to document Zimbabwe "s new land uses during the years of economic crisis, the role of the state in promoting them, the differentiation associated with them, not only between black and white farmers, but also among them, and the implications of all these for the political economy of the Zimbabwean land question. The fact that some of the new land uses avoid redistribution of clearly under-utilised large scale commercial farms suggests that the Zimbabwean land question will remain a live political issue for a long time.
