Book Description
Excerpt from South America From a Surgeon's Point of View The notes which appear on the following pages were gathered during two visits to the southern continent in behalf of the American College of Surgeons, the first in company with Dr. William J. Mayo of Rochester, Minnesota (then President of the College), and the second with Dr. Thomas J. Watkins of Chicago (a Governor of the College). The first voyage was begun on January 7, 1920. We sailed from New York on the SS. Ebro, an 8,000-ton steel ship flying the British flag, and our itinerary included Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. On January 29, 1921, we again sailed from New York on the SS. Ebro. On this occasion we included in our itinerary all of the countries visited the previous year, with the addition of Brazil. Dr. Francis P. Corrigan, a Fellow of the College, had preceded us on our second visit for the purpose of surveying medical conditions in Ecuador and Bolivia, and his interesting report is included in this monograph. This little volume, therefore, which is in the nature of a report to the Fellows of the American College of Surgeons, is actually a collaboration, my own notes being supplemented by excerpts from articles by Dr. William J.Mayo and Dr. Thomas J. Watkins, and Dr. Francis P. Corrigan's report. From the standpoint of the surgeon, the trip had interest in the medical schools, the hospitals, and the operating surgeons of the seven countries of this southern continent that we were privileged to visit. The short time at our disposal and the difficulties of transportation made it impossible for us to include Colombia, Venezuela, and Paraguay. However, visits to these countries will be undertaken as soon as proper arrangements can be made. Although the voyages were made in a purely professional capacity in behalf of the American College of Surgeons, one cannot properly describe them without relating some of the unusual personal experiences we enjoyed which will appeal to both the professional and the non-professional traveler. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters on the Moral and Religious State of South America: Written During a Residence of Nearly Seven Years in Buenos Aires, Chile, Peru, and Colombia I am now about to return to that quarter of the world, and trust that the same gracious hand which protected me and guided me in my former wan deringa there, will still conduct me, and will enable me to sow seed which may spring up unto eternal life. Ten days after this date, I embark for Mexico, as the agent of the British and Foreign Bible So ciety. I go fraught with a sacred treasure, with some thousands of copies of the Holy Scriptures. Besides circulating these, which are nearly all in the Spanish language, I am commissioned to pro cure translations of the Scriptures into the native languages of that country, and which are still spoken there by some millions of the inhabitants. In prosecuting these objects, I intend to travel over the greater part of Mexico and Guatemala. Whilst traversing these parts, I shall probably keep a journal of occurrences, illustrative of the state of the country in a general point of view; and should the small volume now published be favourably re ceived, I may perhaps at some future period have something for the press less unworthy of public attention. Book Description
Excerpt from South American Sketches Although the headquarters of the reader's thoughts during the perusal of this volume will be in Uruguay, his attention Will not be exclu sively confined Within the limits of that republic. Many of the narratives contained in the following pages refer to occurrences in other places. This explanation seems necessary in consequence of the strong family likeness existing in the incidents of public and political life all throughout South America, Which might easily cause the history of current events in one part of that continent to be mistaken for that belonging to another. For centuries Spanish tyranny denied the world access to those countries, and hardly had they shaken Off the political system that strangled their develop ment, when geographical considerations and the invention Of iron steamships placed them at a dis advantage compared with their competitors.
