This report summarizes the 2014 season and historical information regarding commercial salmon fisheries of the South Alaska Peninsula Management Area (Area M). The total commercial salmon harvest in the South Alaska Peninsula was 7,280 Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 1,426,380 sockeye salmon O. nerka, 296,819 coho salmon O. kisutch, 721,209 pink salmon O. gorbuscha, and 501,927 chum salmon O. keta. Harvest of Chinook and coho salmon were above recent 10-year averages (2004-2013). Harvest of sockeye, pink, and chum salmon were below recent 10-year averages (2004-2013). The number of permit holders participating in the fishery was 241. The June commercial salmon harvest included 659,213 sockeye and 390,139 chum salmon. Harvest in the South Unimak fishery was 419,731 sockeye and 239,482 chum salmon, while the Shumagin Islands accounted for 220,436 sockeye and 169,703 chum salmon. No commercial salmon fishery occurred in the Southeastern District Mainland (SEDM) during the allocation period, June 1 through July 25, due to poor escapement of sockeye salmon through the Chignik weir. The total commercial harvest in the SEDM in 2014 was 4 Chinook, 29,655 sockeye, 18,925 coho, 9 pink, and 388 chum salmon. No commercial salmon fishery occurred in the Northwest Stepovak Section from July 1 through July 25 in 2014. The South Alaska Peninsula (minus the SEDM fishery July 1-25) Post-June salmon harvest from July 1 through October 31 included 4,990 Chinook, 767,167 sockeye, 294,341 coho, 540,949 pink, and 111,788 chum salmon. In 2014, the sockeye salmon sustainable escapement goal (SEG) for Orzinski Lake (16,100) was met. Total escapement of pink (1,340,380) salmon did not meet the South Alaska Peninsula SEG range of 1,864,600-3,729,300 fish. The chum salmon escapement in the South Central District lower bound SEG of 89,800 was met. Limited coho salmon surveys were conducted due to their late season run timing.
