Book Description
Excerpt from South Africa and Its Mission Fields In this prefatory note I may explain the circumstances which led me to write this sketch of South Africa and its Mission Fields. At the meeting of the General Presbyterian Council, held in July last year at Edinburgh, there was a considerable gathering of members and associates specially interested in South African Mission work. The cause was represented by such men as Dr. Wangemann of the Berlin Mission; Dr Fabri, of the Rhenish Mission; M. Fisch, of the "Societe des Missions Evan-geliques;" Dr. Andrew Murray, of the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa; Dr. Macgill, of the United Presbyterian Church; Dr. Murray Mitchell and James Stevenson, Esq., of the Free Church, with other South African brethren. There being so many men of high Christian position and influence thus present, it seemed a suitable occasion to hold a conference on the subject of combined action on the part of the Churches and Missions of South Africa represented in the Council. Encountering Empire
Author: Elisabeth Engel
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783515111171
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 303
Book Description
In "Encountering Empire", Elisabeth Engel traces how black American missionaries - men and women grappling with their African heritage - established connections in Africa during the heyday of European colonialism. Reconstructing the black American 'colonial encounter,' Engel analyzes the images, transatlantic relationships, and possibilities of representation African American missionaries developed for themselves while negotiating colonial regimes. Between 1900 and 1939, these missionaries paved the way for the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest independent black American institution, to establish a presence in Britain's sub-Saharan colonies. Illuminating a neglected chapter of Atlantic history, Engel demonstrates that African Americans used imperial structures for their own self-determination. "Encountering Empire" thus challenges the notion that pan-Africanism was the only viable strategy for black emancipation.
