Author: Richard Chenhall
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000185516
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 115
Book Description
This book takes the reader on a sensory ethnographic tour in Japan and describes the many ways sounds seep into everyday experiences. So many ethnographies describe local worlds with a deep attention to what is seen and what people say, but with a limited understanding of the broader sonic environments that enrich and inform everyday life. Through a focus on sounds, both real and imagined, the volume employs a critical ear to engage with a range of sonically enriched encounters, including crosswalk melodies in streetscapes, announcements and jingles at train stations, water features in gardens, dosimeters in nuclear affected zones, sounds of training in music and martial arts halls and celebrations under blossoming cherry trees. The authors use various analytic frames to understand the communicative and symbolic aspects of sounds and to sense the layers of historical meaning, embodied action and affect associated with sonic environments.

The Sound of the Mountain
Author: Yasunari Kawabata
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0307833658
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
From the Nobel Prize-winning writer and acclaimed author of Snow Country comes a beautiful rendering of the predicament of old age—about an elderly Tokyo businessman who must face the failures of his memory and the sudden upsurges of passion that illuminate the end of a life. “A rich, complicated novel.... Of all modern Japanese fiction, Kawabata’s is the closest to poetry.” —The New York Times Book Review By day Ogata Shingo, an elderly Tokyo businessman, is troubled by small failures of memory. At night he associates the distant rumble he hears from the nearby mountain with the sounds of death. In between are the complex relationships that were once the foundations of Shingo’s life: his trying wife; his philandering son; and his beautiful daughter-in-law, who inspires in him both pity and the stirrings of desire. Out of this translucent web of attachments, Kawabata has crafted a novel that is a powerful, serenely observed meditation on the relentless march of time. Translated from the Japanese by Edward G. Seidensticker

ISBN: 1000686884
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 363
Book Description
This book examines the meanings, uses, and agency of voice, noise, sound, and sound technologies across Asia. The Japanese Soldiers in Second World War Thailand
Author: Ichiro Kakizaki
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040013740
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 369
Book Description
Kakizaki re-examines the real image of the Thai-Japanese alliance during the Second World War by focusing on the incidents and accidents that occurred during the passage through, or the stationing, of the Japanese army in Thailand. The book reveals the grassroots relations between Thais and Japanese by utilizing the records of incidents/accidents between Thais and Japanese during the war. The results show that although the number of incidents/accidents was large at the initial and the last stages of war, those caused by Thais were skyrocketing at the last stage of war while those caused by Japanese reached their peak at the initial stage of war before decreasing. Therefore, the real image of the Thai-Japanese alliance was the alliance of endurance that both Thais and Japanese had to be forced to endure the frequently-occurred incidents/accidents. A book for students and academics interested in the Thai/Southeast Asian war history during the Second World War.
