Book Description
Oftentimes, we are in a search for answers. In life we find ourselves questioning ourselves whether we are in the right place. Day after day, I soul search through meditation. I go from my busy workplace, from sound to silence, from movement to stillness, from a limited identity to unlimited space. Then after I find my answers for the day, I use my paint brush to paint my art, capture my thoughts, and then I write about them. Soul searching is good for the soul, and it helps release our feelings that we often keep locked up so deeply. It is when I am quiet, I begin to reflect because my soul usually knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind.

Book Description
Memory, War, and Dictatorship in Recent Spanish Fiction by Women analyzes five novels by women writers that present women’s experiences during and after the Spanish Civil War and Franco dictatorship, highlighting the struggles of female protagonists of different ages to confront an unresolved individual and collective past. It discusses the different narrative models and strategies used in these works and the ways in which they engage with their political and historical context, particularly in the light of campaigns for the so-called recovery of historical memory in Spain (the “memory boom”) and in the broader context of memory and trauma studies. The novels that are examined in this book are Dulce Chacón’s La voz dormida (2002), Rosa Regàs’s Luna lunera (1999), Josefina Aldecoa’s La fuerza del destino (1997), Carme Riera’s La mitad del alma (2005), and Almudena Grandes’s El corazón helado (2007). These works all highlight the multiple nature of memories and histories and demonstrate the complex ways in which the past impacts on the present. This book also considers the extent to which the memories represented in these five novels are inflected by gender and informed by the gender politics of twentieth-century and contemporary Spain.

This book contains Book of Her Foundations and Minor Works. Includes general and biblical index. In 1573, while staying in Salamanca to assist her nuns in the task of establishing one of her seventeen monasteries, Teresa began composing the story of their foundation. This book not only tells the story of the establishment of her monasteries but, characteristic of Teresa, digresses into counsels on prayer, love, melancholy, virtuous living and dying, plus other teachings of the Mother Foundress. This book also has an excellent introduction, chronology, and map of Teresa's foundations and journeys. Five of her brief works, including her poetry, complete ICS Publications' third volume of her Collected Works. Includes general and biblical index.

Book Description
Contemporary Spain reflects broader patterns of globalization and has been the site of tensions between nationalists and immigrants. This case study examines a rural town in Spain’s Andalucía in order to shed light on the workings of coexistence. The town of Órgiva’s diverse population includes hippies from across Europe, European converts to Sufi Islam, and immigrants from North Africa. Christina Civantos combines the analysis of written and visual cultural texts with oral narratives from residents. In this book, we see that although written and especially televisual narratives about the town highlight tolerance and multiculturalism, they mask tensions and power differentials. Toleration is an ongoing negotiation, and this book shows us how we can identify the points of contact that create robust, respect-based tolerance. “This is a book that is both a personal account and a rigorous academic study. It is a model for the kind of engaged humanistic work we are now beginning to see as a hallmark of the post-theory moment, and one that remembers the hard lessons of ethnographic fieldwork as well as the challenging foundational work from philosophically-tinged theory.” —Debra A. Castillo, Cornell University “Filled with rich descriptions and interwoven personal anecdotes of both Civantos and her interlocuters that complement scholarly analysis.” —Jessica R. Boll, Carroll University

Book Description
Abrecaminos: Opening the Ways: An Anthology of Story, Poetry, Testimony. Abre means to open. Caminos means way. An abrecaminos is one who opens the way, who makes a way where there is no way. One who opens one way opens many ways. These young writers explore their worlds in two anthologies accompanied by the literature of the best Latino/a writers. Each book begins with a writing peregrinage/pilgrimage to Macchu Picchu accompanied by Pablo Neruda, Las Alturas de Macchu Picchu, and this principio/principle: The way up is the way down. Their work here includes long, personal transformational poems exploring border crossings that are geographical, political and personal. Essays and stories are first documents. They witness to loss, migration, arrival. Writers explore archetypal images of women in Latin American culture, by reading and writing to, famous women in the culture, including Malinche, Guadalupe, Sor Juana, Rosario Castellanos, and Gloria Anzaldúa. Interview with their mothers are first family documents in a new country. Telling their stories to their children, the mothers anchor, and give place names to the towns and ranchos from where many of these families have emigrated. They reveal the range of experiences these families bring to a new country. Interviews with farm workers show first experiences in Yakima Valley in Eastern Washington. Written mostly in English, but going back and forth between languages, and sometimes remaining in Spanish, many of these writers are bilingual on the way to becoming bicultural. These books, which include photos of each writer and families interviewed, along with an extensive About the Author and Vocabulario sections that are documents meant to enhance understanding of the talents of these writers, as well as the complexity of the journey. The truths of their lives takes care of a great deal of misunderstanding. The fact of their beauty and stories stands in direct contradiction to their press.
