Book Description
This work offers an edition and translation of some 30 poems by the trobairitz, a remarkable group of women poets from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, who composed in the style and language of the troubadours. Introductory essays and notes by specialists in the field place the poems in literary, linguistic, historical, social and cultural contexts. English versions facing Occitan texts elucidate the original language and themes, while supplying poems that can be enjoyed by contemporary readers . The varied corpus includes love songs (cansos), debate poems (tensos), political satires (sirventes) and other lyrical sub-genres (including dawn-song, lament, ballad, chanson de mal mariee). To represent the range of female voices available in the lyric corpus of the troubadours, the editors have selected songs consistently attributed to historically documented women poets, as well as songs whose authorship is open to question. The latter may be presented by the manuscripts with or without a named woman poet, but all offer female speakers personae characteristic of troubadour poets in general.

Book Description
Music is commonly felt to offer a valued experience, yet to put that experience into words is no easy task. Rather than view verbal representations of music as somehow secondary to the music itself, Literary Music argues that it is in such representations that our understanding of music and its meanings is constituted and explored. Focusing on recent fictional and theoretical texts, Stephen Benson proposes literature, narrative fiction in particular, as a singular form of musical performance. Literary Music concentrates not only on song and opera, those forms in which words and music overtly confront one another, but also on a small number of recurring ideas around which the literary and the musical interact, including voice, narrative, performance, and silence. The book considers a wide range of literary and theoretical texts, including those of Blanchot and Bakhtin, Kazuo Ishiguro, Vikram Seth, David Malouf and J.M. Coetzee. The musical forms discussed range from opera to the string quartet, together with individual works by Elgar, Strauss and Michael Berkeley. As such, Literary Music offers an informed interdisciplinary approach to the study of literature and music that participates in the lively theoretical debate on the status of meaning in music.

Book Description
The lives that shaped the songs that shape our faithTheir stories and lives are seldom considered or known, yet their works and influence are felt almost every day somewhere in the world and have been for centuries. They are the hymnists and their gift to the world for centuries and for the future are found in the beautiful words of their hymns.Hymnists are the poets of the spirit, the leaders of light who pull us from the dark and who help show the way back to clarity and purpose in our lives based on faith and redemption. Their hymns have survived wars, famines, plagues, the Dark Ages, revolutions, the rise and decline of church attendance, contemporary debasement of religion and anything related to worship, and many other follies and frailties of mankind. The hymns survived because of dedicated hymnists and the meaningfulness of their words to a world that always faces turmoil and challenges to faith and family. This book explores the lives of many of our favorite hymnists. The reader will find almost 400 biographies of hymnists, including their compelling stories. The reader will rejoice in the hymnist’s inspirational stories, find redemption in their despair and heartbreak, and experience reassurance in their faith. The words of the hymnists help us cope with fear, search for hope, and find inspiration. When a reader explores hymns more closely and overlays the themes of the hymns with the lives of the hymnists a pattern emerges. There are numerous references to fear, hope, and inspiration, just like in the Bible. These themes are so pervasive that they need to be studied and in studying them consideration should be given to how they interconnect. Consequently, this book explores the impact that fear, hope and inspiration have on our lives and how they are linked.
