Book Description
Only four Roman epic poems survive from the Flavian period (69-96 AD): Valerius Flaccus's Argonautica, Statius's Thebaid and Achilleid, and Silius Italicus's Punica. Neil W. Bernstein argues that these poems contain depictions of kinship that are significantly different from earlier epic and examines these representations in the context of the social, political, and aesthetic changes of the early Imperial period. The author analyses various kinds of kinship, including biological relationships, elective relationships such as marriage and adoption, and the symbolic bonds of social and political allegiances, to illuminate the complex ways in which the Roman upper class asserted their status with or without noble lineage. A fresh and fascinating look at not only Roman poetry, but the epic tradition itself, In the Image of the Ancestors is essential reading for classicists and literary historians.

Book Description
Where Theory and Practice Meet is a collection of nineteen papers in translation studies. Unlike many similar books published in recent decades, which are mostly non-translation-oriented, veering to issues with little or no relevance to translation, this book focuses on the translation process, on theory formulation with reference to actual translation, on getting to grips with translation problems, and on explaining translation in language which can be understood by the general reader. Perceptive and wide-ranging, the book covers language pairs that include Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Latin, and Classical Greek, and discusses, among other things, translations of Dante’s La Divina Commedia; translations of Shakespeare’s Hamlet; Goethe’s “Prometheus” as a case of untranslatability; the challenge of translating Garcilaso de la Vega’s “Primera Égloga” into Chinese; John Minford’s translation of martial arts fiction; and Lin Shu’s translation of Alexandre Dumas’s La Dame aux camélias.

Book Description
Wordplay can be seen as a genuine interface phenomenon. It can be found both in everyday communication and in literary texts, and it can fulfil a range of functions – it may be entertaining and comical, it may be used to conceal taboo, and it may influence the way in which the speaker’s character is perceived. Moreover, wordplay also reflects on language and communication: it reveals surprising alternative readings, and emphasizes the phonetic similarity of linguistic signs that also points towards relations on the level of content. Wordplay unravels characteristics of literary language in everyday communication and opens up the possibility to analyze literary texts from a linguistic perspective. The first two volumes of the series The Dynamics of Wordplay therefore aim at bringing together contributions from linguistics and literary studies, focusing on theoretical issues such as basic techniques of wordplay, and its relationship to genres and discourse traditions. These issues are complemented by a series of case studies on the use of wordplay in individual authors and specific historical contexts. The contributions offer a fresh look on the multifaceted dynamics of wordplay in different communicative settings.

Book Description
Die Dissertation The Implosion of Negativity ist in englischer Sprache verfasst. Der Anhang enthält eine deutsche Zusammenfassung, eine umfassende Bibliographie und ein persönliches Interview mit Paul Auster. Englischer Klappentext: For most readers and critics Paul Auster's oeuvre begins with The New York Trilogy, yet his major success as a novelist was preceded by a decade of almost obsessive devotion to poetry. The Implosion of Negativity is the first book-length study of Paul Auster's early work. From his dense, intensely lyric sequences of the early 1970s to the more discursive style of Auster's final book of poems, Facing the Music (1980), and on to his experimental prose of the early eighties, The Implosion of Negativity traces a fascinating journey through the author's formative years. Andreas Hau's dissertation begins with a detailed analysis of Auster's early long poem "Unearth", examines overlooked influences such as Paul Celan and Martin Buber, and continues with Auster's exploration of his Jewish heritage in Wall Writing, his rediscovery of the American objectivists in "Disappearances", and his encounters with the visual arts in Fragments from Cold. Book Description
Only recently have scholars turned their attention to Silius Italicus' Punica, a poem the reputation of which was eclipsed by the emergence of Virgil’s Aeneid as the canonical Latin epos of Augustan Rome. This collection of essays aims at examining the importance of Silius' historical epic in Flavian, Domitianic Rome by offering a detailed overview of the poem's context and intertext, its themes and images, and its reception from antiquity through Renaissance and modern philological criticism. This pioneering volume is the first comprehensive, collaborative study on the longest epic poem in Latin literature.
