Book Description
"Through a unique correlation of contemporary documents and architectural analysis, Stephen Murray provides a rich and unusual history of the building of the late Gothic cathedral at Troyes. From what sources were the funds obtained? How were decisions made about construction methods and style? What problems did the builders face and how were they solved? To what extent did individual stone carvers leave their imprint? Murray's narrative is based on thorough study of the fabric, or building, accounts kept by the cathedral for more than 250 years, actual records of receipts and expenses - from whom money was obtained, to whom it was paid, and for what purposes. Part One traces the progress of the building from the early thirteenth through the mid-sixteenth century, highlighting the contributions of individual master masons. Part Two provides written and visual records. A substantial selection of texts from the fabric accounts, chronologically arranged, is given both in the original language and in English translation; these rare documents furnish a wealth of information relating to the identity and skills of the artisans, the definition of the work at hand, and the techniques of construction. A series of charts analyzes the state of fabric fund and the composition of the workshop at critical stages in the construction process. Readers can follow the development of the cathedral by relating the text to the 120 detailed architectural drawings and photographs included." --

Book Description
Norwich Cathedral, founded in 1096 by Bishop Herbert de Losinga, is of outstanding importance both architecturally and historically. Its archives, dating back to the time of its foundation, as well as the building itself, its decoration and contents, constitute an unbroken and fascinating record. Norwich Cathedral, 1096-1996 deals with all aspects of the church's history, both institutional and artistic. Written by experts, and heavily illustrated, it has been designed to be accessible to the general reader. The building itself is Romanesque, augmented by later Gothic campaigns. It has of course also undergone repair and modification throughout the centuries both in detail and occasionally in substance. It nevertheless keeps its early identity essentially intact. Its contents, from all periods of its history but notably the middle ages, are themselves of great interest: the medieval roof bosses are uniquely rich, as are the wall paintings.

Book Description
The Impact of the Edwardian Castles in Wales publishes the proceedings of a conference held in 2007, a year that marked the seventh centenary of the death of King Edward I, which set out to review recent scholarship on castles that he built in north Wales after two wars, in 1277 and 1282-83 and a Welsh uprising in 1294-95, and to rethink the effect that their building had upon Wales in the past, present and future. Building upon the seminal work of Arnold Taylor, whose study of the buildings and documentary evidence has been pivotal to Edwardian castle studies for more than fifty years, the volume includes papers which call into question the role of Master James of St George as the architect of the kings new castles; the role of Richard the Engineer, the nature of royal accommodation in the thirteenth century and a detailed look at how households worked, especially in the kitchen and accounting departments. New approaches to castle studies are encouraging a more holistic understanding of the Edwardian castles and their context and to this end papers consider their impact on Welsh society and its princes in the thirteenth century, notably Llywelyn ab Iorwerth ( Fawr , the Great) and his grandson, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, prince of Wales. Their symbolism and meaning through the words of Welsh poets and the mythology behind Caernarfon Castle are also examined, so too is the role of Welshmen in Edward Is armies. The wider context is considered with papers on the Edwardian towns in Wales, the baronial castles in north Wales and Edward I in Scotland and Gascony. The castles still have powerful resonance and the Minister for Heritage in the Welsh Assembly Government considers their role and presentation in Wales today and in the future. Robert Liddiard concludes that the volume 'not only takes our knowledge of the Edwardian castles forward, but also informs the study of castles in the British Isles'.
