Book Description
Excerpt from Some Plain Facts About the Forests The advances made in forest conservation both by public agencies and by progressive industrial and privateoperators merit attention as praiseworthy steps in the right direction. However, we must face realistically the facts of continuing and unnecessary forest deterioration. For us to gloss over the unpleasant facts of the situation will not help in achieving the necessary corrective action. Book Description
Excerpt from Forests and Trees This book has been written to assist in impressing upon the young the value of our forests and to give them some appreciation of what is being done, as well as of what must yet be done, in order to preserve them. It is not a handbook on forestry, but contains interesting information which, it is hoped, will tend to create a healthy public opinion regarding the use and care of trees. While the book is really the expression of that appreciation of trees which comes only from long and intimate acquaintance, yet the literature on the subject has been freely used, and the author wishes to acknowledge the help received from the following: Sargent's "Manual of the Trees of North America"; Britton's "North American Trees"; Fernow's "Care of Trees"; Britton and Brown's Illustrated Flora of the Northern States and Canada; "Gray's New Manual of Botany" by Robinson and Fernald; Rydberg's "Flora of the Rocky Mountains and Adjacent Plains"; Coulter and Nelson's "Rocky Mountain Flora;" and Macoun's "Catalogue of Canadian Plants." Very particular mention should also be made of the many excellent publications of the Forestry Branch of the Department of the Interior; and special thanks are due to Mr. R. H. Campbell, Director of Forestry, for valuable suggestions and assistance, as well as for a very careful and suggestive reading of the proof sheets by the staff of the Forestry Branch. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Forest With the design of telling the younger gener ation what the woodlands of this country are, and what they mean, this book has been pre pared, chiefly for use in the schools. Much of what it contains is new and out of the beaten track of textbooks, but it is nevertheless impor tant, especially at this time, when more attention 1s being concentrated upon subjects of practical importance. These earlier lessons being learned, pupils will be in a position to take an advanced step in nature study and in that other subject, very closely allied to it, American forestry.
