Book Description
Excerpt from Some Phases of the Negro Question In the North we met the best class of negroes, well-dressed, as waiters and porters, where for twenty-five-cent tips they are very polite and obliging. They lack the initiative and the power to lead, but are imitative, and the majority of them can be taught to skillfully perform certain lines of work, and, under the direction of more intelligent white men, become valuable laborers. A few negroes in an environment of hustling western whites are far superior to those of a population of one-third negroes in the South. In the South we see them in groups of hundreds, ragged. Dirty. Ignorant, and having a pungent, sickening odor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Negro Question But political strength is little by itself. The military maxim, that no defences are strong without force enough in them to occupy their line, is true of civil affairs. Entrenchment in the letter of a constitution avails little with the people at large on either side of a question, unless the line of that entrenchment is occupied by a living conviction of being in the right. The most ultra-southern position on the negro question has an element of strength close akin to this. To be right is the only real meces sity; but where is the community that will not make and defend with treasure and blood the assumption that what is necessary is. Right? Southerners, in the political sense of the term, may sometimes lack a clear, firm-founded belief that they are right; they may have no more than a restless confidence that others are as wrong as they; but they have at least a profound conviction that they are moved by an imminent, unremitting, imperative necessity. Not that this is all; hundreds of thousands of them, incapacitated by this very conviction from falling into sympathy with the best modern thought, have been taught, and are learn ing and teaching, not only on the hustings, but in school, in col lege, at the fireside, through the daily press, in the social circle and in church, that in their attitude on the negro question they are legally, morally and entirely right. Book Description
Excerpt from The Negro Question: An Essay The vote of the negro played, however, still an important part at the elections, especially in such districts where he outnumbered the white population. The negro voted always only for his own inter est or what he considered to be such. Either for the Republican party, from which he expected in return the appointment to public offices and which - he thought - would protect him against the ever present ghost of the reintroduction of slavery, or also for anybody who would offer him a dollar for his vote. With full conviction of the right and with the intention and wish for the general welfare the negro voted never. Book Description
Excerpt from The Negro Problem To the mass of those born in slavery the change was one of no profit. When the excitement of the change was over they seemed to feel like children lost in a wood, needing the old protection of the stronger mastering hand. It was clear to even the best wishers of the newly freed slaves that the generation that first saw the dawn of freedom must pass away before it would be known just how the race would meet the new life.
