The three-dimensional structure of the Santa Ana was investigated in two case studies. Incorporated into a descriptive model of the Santa Ana were: (a) a bispectral gravity wave flow with a lee trough, produced by conservation of potential vorticity having a wave length of the order of 300 km. and short waves 6 to 10 km. long; (b) intensity of the foehn related to the Montgomery stream function on an isentropic surface in the upper portion of the planetary boundary layer; and (c) foehn islands and foehn surfacing related to the long and short waves, respectively. Both fire and climatic variability have monumental impacts on the dynamics of temperate ecosystems. These impacts can sometimes be extreme or devastating as seen in recent El Nino/La Nina cycles and in uncontrolled fire occurrences.
