The story begins with her arrival in New York in 1732 and includes her servitude in Pennsylvania, her marriage to a school master, their lives in Rhode Island, and her return to Pennsylvania to visit Quaker relations. She remarried in 1746 following the death of her abusive husband and returned to Ireland in 1753. She died there in 1755. Her autobiography was first published in Philadelphia in 1807.

It was at once a disappointment and a treasure trove to find that this Autobiography had been previously printed, for in the various editions, of which the earliest is dated 1774 and the latest 1846, lie the few further facts to be found about the writer's life. Hers was a strange career indeed, but the account she has left is really the history of the development of a mystical soul; and though Elizabeth Ashbridge went through thrilling adventures enough, she mentions them but as incidental to her spiritual development.
