Solvated electrons are powerful liquid-phase reagents that break chemical bonds and thereby create additional reactive species. We explored the distinct chemistry initiated by electrons liberated near the liquid surface rather than within the bulk, by detecting the products resulting from exposure of liquid glycerol to a beam of sodium atoms. Na atoms ionized in the surface region, generating electrons that reacted with deuterated glycerol, C3D5(OD)3, to produce D atoms, D2, D2O, and glycerol fragments. Surprisingly, 43 ℗l 4% of the D atoms traversed the interfacial region and desorbed into vacuum before attacking C-D bonds to produce D2. Experiments utilizing partially deuterated glycerol revealed that electrons cleave O-H versus O-D bonds in a ratio of at least ~20:1 to form H and D atoms, which most likely proceed to form molecular hydrogen by abstraction of H from glycerol C-H groups. Residence time measurements indicated that molecular hydrogen desorbs into vacuum within ~10 Îos on average after the Na atom's first contact with the surface, corresponding a near-interfacial depth for creation of hydrogen atoms of ~50 ©5. Experiments also indicated that 20% of Na atoms impinging on glycerol at an incident angle Îinc = 45℗ scatter from the surface of glycerol while retaining most of their 12 kJ/mol incident kinetic energy. Comparison to Na-atom scattering from a Teflon surface indicated that80% of the Na atoms instead enter the liquid where they presumably ionize to form Na+ and e-. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the Na atom colliding with a 17-molecule glycerol cluster were used to investigate its solvation and ionization. Glycerol OH groups reoriented throughout the 10 ps trajectory, forming a solvent cage around the ionizing Na atom and its electron. While the atom reaches maximum ionization near the end of the 10 ps trajectory, it does not strictly increase throughout the trajectory, likely due to positional and orientational fluctuations of the glycerol OH and CH groups. The extent of ionization tracked well with coordination of Na+ and e- to the O and H atoms of the OH groups, implying simultaneous, rather than sequential, solvation and ionization.
