Book Description
Inspired and informed by the latest research in African American, military, and social history, the fourteen original essays in this book tell the stories of the African American soldiers who fought for the Union cause. An introductory essay surveys the history of the U.S. Colored Troops (USCT) from emancipation to the end of the Civil War. Seven essays focus on the role of the USCT in combat, chronicling the contributions of African Americans who fought at Port Hudson, Milliken's Bend, Olustee, Fort Pillow, Petersburg, Saltville, and Nashville. Other essays explore the recruitment of black troops in the Mississippi Valley; the U.S. Colored Cavalry; the military leadership of Colonels Thomas Higginson, James Montgomery, and Robert Shaw; African American chaplain Henry McNeal Turner; the black troops who occupied postwar Charleston; and the experiences of USCT veterans in postwar North Carolina. Collectively, these essays probe the broad military, political, and social significance of black soldiers' armed service, enriching our understanding of the Civil War and African American life during and after the conflict. The contributors are Anne J. Bailey, Arthur W. Bergeron Jr., John Cimprich, Lawrence Lee Hewitt, Richard Lowe, Thomas D. Mays, Michael T. Meier, Edwin S. Redkey, Richard Reid, William Glenn Robertson, John David Smith, Noah Andre Trudeau, Keith Wilson, and Robert J. Zalimas Jr.

Book Description
Described by the BBC as 'one of the most significant American films ever made', ""Soldier Blue"" became explosively linked to real events of the Vietnam War as a result of the uncanny similarities between the U.S. Cavalry's extermination of Native Americans depicted at the film's finale and the American massacre of Vietnamese civilians at My Lai in 1968, just two years before the film was released.Drawing on primary sources and interviews with individuals associated with the production, this work solves the longstanding mystery of whether ""Soldier Blue"", a picture that set a new mark in cinematic violence in 1970, deliberately echoed events in the Vietnam War. In addition, the author details the bizarre location shoot in Mexico, describes the various post-production and censorship problems encountered by the film's director and producers, and examines the circumstances in and beyond the American film industry in the late 1960s that led to the creation of such a radical and bitter film. Richly illustrated with many rare and previously unpublished photographs, the book also contains four appendices providing a complete list of cast/crew credits, a revised final budget for the film, complete reproductions of two 1971 British articles on the film and a reproduction of a ""Harper's Weekly"" article from 1885.

Book Description
The all-volunteer 'Blue Division' was a formation that allowed Franco's technically neutral Spain to support Nazi Germany's invasion of Russia. Following initial training in Germany, the Blue Division's units were sent to the Eastern Front in August 1941, where, after a 40-day march to the front, the Division fought in several major actions including Leningrad. In 1943, with the tide turning against the Axis forces in Russia, the Division was ordered to be withdrawn, yet many men chose to stay on and serve with the Volunteer Legion. Even after the collapse in the East, some volunteered to serve with Waffen-SS units through to the fall of Berlin in 1945. This book narrates the experiences of the common soldier, exploring his motivation for serving the Wehrmacht, and detailing his dramatic experiences in a brutal and hostile theatre of World War II.
