Book Description
Excerpt from Sociology: Rules, Roles, and Relationships But since no social system is a closed affair, since there are strains within and stress without, we m0ve on to a discussion of changes in systems of social relationship (part III). While I pay some attention to planned social change, it seemed better to emphasize the implica tions for change lying latent in behavior patterns whose manifest functions are poles apart from their unintended consequences. A useful vantage point for assessing degree and sources Of change is the rural-urban axis. It provides not merely a contrast in space, but also a dramatic transformation through time in American society. Paralleling this shift there are basic changes in the nature of the social order. The evidence clearly suggests that there are markedly different requirements for maintaining a system of relationships in primary and secondary, rural and urban, simple and complex groups. Finally, in the epilogue, I indulge my prejudices by discussing the significance of the sociologist's role in our world, and the resist auces he encounters in the pursuit of reliable knowledge about man's behavior among men. A Hundred Years of Sociology
Author: G.Duncan Mitchell
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351535064
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 325
Book Description
Tracing the development of scientifi c sociology from Comte to the present, A Hundred Years of Sociology is a concise, narrative history of the major fi gures, ideas, and schools that lie behind the work of contemporary sociologists. Covering both theoretical and empirical contributions, the book describes the convergence of two major streams of sociological thought: a speculative and philosophical tradition and a reformist, fact-fi nding tradition. Throughout the volume, the author is as much concerned with the content of ideas as with their labels and chronology. The important developments in both American and European sociology are considered in full, and special attention is given to the emergence of social anthropology and social psychology and to the profound infl uence of World War II on current work in the field.
