Book Description
Many people find slugs to be unattractive, but this story turns ugly into amazing. This charming children's book details the nighttime adventures of Slimy Slick, our favorite banana slug, as he glides into danger on his way to devour the tasty treat he has been dreaming about. Along the way, he encounters an earthworm, a shrew, and a boy and his dog. This story is written for the 6-13 age group but appeals to adults as well through humor and fascinating facts. Readers will learn about the clever design of this gastropod and see how Slick uses his natural gifts to protect himself and to help him navigate through life in the wild. The ecological benefits of the banana slug are highlighted through the voice of a scientist, and slug anatomy and function are woven into the story to provide further educational value about these amazing creatures. The main character, a young boy, learns about life in the natural forest and garden as his feelings range from joy to anger and back again. The story, written by a retired teacher and chiropractor, provides 'reach' for readers to help maintain their interest and to promote higher learning. When read alongside an adult, magic can happen; this is a fabulous way to connect with the young reader. The emotional component builds as the story progresses and engages the reader even further. It's an endearing story that promotes environmental wisdom, creates tension when our hero's life is threatened, and provides humor and enjoyment for all readers. Humor counterbalances the factual information presented, and the cartoon illustrations provide a wonderful sense of fun. This is truly a story that is both educational and fun, as well as being visually engaging. SLIMY SLICK is a story that will be read over and over again and passed on to generations, as it is a timeless tale.

Book Description
Slime, goo, gunge, gloop, gels, sols, globules, jellies, emulsions, greases, soaps, syrups, glues, lubricants, liquid crystals, moulds, plasmas, and protoplasms - the viscous is not one thing, but rather a quality of resistance and flow, of stickiness and slipperiness. It is a state of matter that oozes into the gaps of our everyday existence, across age groups, between cultures and disciplines.Since the large-scale extraction of petroleum in the 19th century, the viscous has witnessed a proliferation in the variety of its forms. Mechanized industry required lubricants and oil distillation produced waste products that were refined to form Vaseline. From this age, new viscous forms and technologies emerged: products from plastic (and plastic explosives) to cosmetics, glycerine, asphalt, sexual lubrication, hydro- and aero-gels, and even anti-climb paint.Based on unique and wide-ranging research, The Viscous is the first major investigation of encounters with and possibilities of the viscous over the course of the last century, not simply as a material state, but also as an imaginative event. We enter into a story of matter at its most wayward, deviant, hesitant, and resistant. From asphalt lakes to industrial molasses tanks, from liquid crystals squirming in our screens to milk fetishes, The Viscous discloses gooeyness as a peculiarly modern phase of matter. "Everything oozes," as Beckett's Estragon famously proclaims in Waiting for Godot. Viscous dynamics are exposed as not only hugely various in a post-industrial age, but particularly useful ways of thinking, feeling, writing, and making in a time of ecological anxiety. Freddie Mason is a writer, researcher, and filmmaker living in London. He received his doctorate from the Royal College of art in 2019, on the history and futures of semi-states. Before The Viscous, he published Ada Kaleh (Little Island Press, 2016).

Book Description
What is it like? – This is often the first question we ask about any object, and it is typically answered with adjectives: old, smooth, pointed, narrow, etc. Characteristics of things around us is a fundamental aspect of how we conceptualize the physical world, regardless of when or where we live – and regardless of our language. Despite this, the vocabulary of physical qualities has received comparatively little attention in lexical typology: most research so far has focused on verbs and the actions they express. This volume presents a lexico-typological study of several domains of physical qualities: ‘sharp’/‘blunt’, ‘wet’, ‘empty’/‘full’, ‘old’, as well as dimensions temperature and surface texture. It discusses several theoretical issues including intragenetic language sampling, the possibility of signed vs. spoken language comparison at the lexicon level, and the potential of applying computational models of distributional semantics to lexical typology. The book will be of interest to linguists with a focus on typology, general and lexical semantics, to lexicographers, and to language students and teachers.
