A comparative study of three six-axis force sensors selected after an extensive literature survey is presented. A sensor to measure ground contact force at each foot of a walking machine is recommended. Principles of force sensing are reviewed and characteristics of sensing elements are discussed. Results of simulation of three six-axis force sensors are presented as behavior curves, sensitivity plots and compliance matrices. These simulations use finite element techniques. Condition numbers of compliance matrices are presented as a measure of overall sensor performance. Estimates of manufacturing costs are included as a final selection criterion.

Multi-Component Force Sensing Systems focuses on the design, development, decoupling, and applications of multi-component force sensing systems. Force and moment information can be used as feedback to form an automatic control system to accomplish efficient manipulation. The origins of force measurement and control can be traced back to the late 1970s. Since then, multi-component F/M (force/moment) sensing systems have been widely known and intensively studied. Part I introduces the basic "Principles and Methods of Force Measurement" according to a classification into a dozen of force transducers types: resistive, inductive, capacitive, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrodynamic, magnetoelastic, galvanomagnetic (Hall-effect), vibrating wires, (micro)resonators, acoustic and gyroscopic. Part II discusses the "(Strain Gauge) Force Transducers Components", evolving from the classical force transducer to the digital / intelligent one, with the incorporation of three subsystems (sensors, electromechanics and informatics). The elastic element (EE) is the "heart" of the force transducer and basically determines its performance.
