Book Description

Author: Simon Schwartzman
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030442632
Category : Education
Languages : en

Book Description
This book presents an overview of the region with one of the fastest growing higher education sectors in the world. Until the beginning of the 1980s, universities were restricted to the elites in Latin American countries, with less than 5 million students enrolled in its courses. The boom of Latin American higher education is analyzed in this contributed volume by leading experts from the region. They discuss the causes and consequences of this massive expansion and the challenges they pose for different stakeholders such as governments, private entrepreneurs, teachers, researchers, students, policy makers, educational managers and many other social groups. Topics discussed in the volume include: Massive expansion of tertiary enrollment in Latin America Expansion of private higher education Proliferation of new kinds of institutions, different from the classic university model The challenge of developing quality assurance and accreditation systems Internationalization of academic research and teaching in Latin America The challenge of integrating academic research and technological innovation Higher Education in Latin America and the Challenges of the 21st Century will be a valuable resource for educational researchers, sociologists, political scientists and other social scientists dedicated to the study of the expansion of higher education and its social implications in different parts of the world. Strategic Management of Universities in the Ibero-America Region
Author: Jairo H. Cifuentes-Madrid
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 331914684X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 160
Book Description
This book provides the readers with a map of the higher education systems and strategic management trends in the higher education institutions within countries of the Ibero-America region. The key feature of this volume is the presentation of a conceptual framework as a point of reference for the development of university management systems in a specific context. Furthermore, the book provides an overview of the development of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean, to advance understanding of the changes observed in the institutional strategic management setting. The book examines and compares the types of strategic management processes used, as well as the models of applicability of strategy-making. This analysis is done by cutting through a critical review of the processes and systems of university management used in the various analysed countries, and pays special attention to the actors involved, the processes, the reporting systems, the expectations and the limitations. Additionally, the book introduces a methodology for the identification and implementation of best practice in university strategic management, and presents practical suggestions about the ways in which processes and models can be used to increase quality and competitive advantage.

Shadow Libraries
Author: Joe Karaganis
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262535017
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
How students get the materials they need as opportunities for higher education expand but funding shrinks. From the top down, Shadow Libraries explores the institutions that shape the provision of educational materials, from the formal sector of universities and publishers to the broadly informal ones organized by faculty, copy shops, student unions, and students themselves. It looks at the history of policy battles over access to education in the post–World War II era and at the narrower versions that have played out in relation to research and textbooks, from library policies to book subsidies to, more recently, the several “open” publication models that have emerged in the higher education sector. From the bottom up, Shadow Libraries explores how, simply, students get the materials they need. It maps the ubiquitous practice of photocopying and what are—in many cases—the more marginal ones of buying books, visiting libraries, and downloading from unauthorized sources. It looks at the informal networks that emerge in many contexts to share materials, from face-to-face student networks to Facebook groups, and at the processes that lead to the consolidation of some of those efforts into more organized archives that circulate offline and sometimes online— the shadow libraries of the title. If Alexandra Elbakyan's Sci-Hub is the largest of these efforts to date, the more characteristic part of her story is the prologue: the personal struggle to participate in global scientific and educational communities, and the recourse to a wide array of ad hoc strategies and networks when formal, authorized means are lacking. If Elbakyan's story has struck a chord, it is in part because it brings this contradiction in the academic project into sharp relief—universalist in principle and unequal in practice. Shadow Libraries is a study of that tension in the digital era. Contributors Balázs Bodó, Laura Czerniewicz, Miroslaw Filiciak, Mariana Fossatti, Jorge Gemetto, Eve Gray, Evelin Heidel, Joe Karaganis, Lawrence Liang, Pedro Mizukami, Jhessica Reia, Alek Tarkowski

Publisher: DEStech Publications, Inc
ISBN: 1605951536
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 621
Book Description
The ICAEM2014 aims to bring together researchers, educators and students from around the world in both industry and academia for sharing the state-of-art research results and applications, for exploring new areas of research and development, and for discussing emerging issues on education and management fields. We received a total of 312 submissions from various parts of the world. The Technical Program Committee worked very hard to have all papers reviewed before the review deadline. The final technical program consists of 92 papers. There are one keynote speech and 2 invited sessions. The proceedings were published by DEStech Publications, Inc. and will submitted to Ei Compendex databases for indexing. We would like to mention that, due to the limitation of the conference venue capacity, we are not able to include many fine papers in the technical program. Our apology goes to those authors.
