Book Description
Candice Brathwaite's much-anticipated second book about all the things she wishes she'd been told when she was young and needed guidance. I Am Not Your Baby Mother was a landmark publication in 2020. A thought-provoking, urgent and inspirational guide to life as a Black British mum, it was an important call-to-arms allowing mothers to take control and scrap the parenting rulebook to do it their own way. It was a Sunday Times top five bestseller. Sista Sister goes further. It is a compilation of essays about all the things Candice wishes someone had talked to her about when she was a young Black girl growing up in London. From family and money to Black hair and fashion, as well as relationships between people of different races and colourism, this will be a fascinating read that will have another profound impact on conversations about Black Lives Matter. Written in Candice's trademark straight-talking, warm and funny style, it will delight her fans, old and new.

Pirates
Author: Elaine Alijah
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1420806203
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 217
Book Description
"..I didn't want to be coldly cast away in a lifeboat with memories, a map and a dream. The map was awfully good, but I really didn't want a map. I just wanted my Dad." "..I figured that he probably planned to head west to hide out on Grandpa's farm. It was the perfect hideout, coveted for a long time by some of the island's leading ICE men." Elaine Alijah "Pirates: My Dad's Mystery" is certainly not a biography. Rather, it is a meandering voyage through my divorcee Dad's childhood, through a series of open-ended, inter-twined dramatic short stories (or "tracks") to adulthood. The treacherous ride continues up and down the corporate ladder and eventually through judicial hell, where like I've said before, Dad made a few very serious mistakes . It's the "vibeztrack" of Dad's life, available in both Standard and Teaching Editions. Perhaps even more intriguing than the stories in the book, is the dramatic epic behind it. Fortunately, for those who need to know, a wealth of behind-the-scenes info and both Elaine Alijah and C.C. Foxx, are very accessible at www.piratesthebook.com.

Worlding Postcolonial Sexualities
Author: Kanika Batra
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 100043012X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
Worlding Postcolonial Sexualities demonstrates how late twentieth century postcolonial print cultures initiated a public discourse on sexual activism and contends that postcolonial feminist and queer archives offer alternative histories of sexual precarity, vulnerability, and resistance. The book’s comparative focus on India, Jamaica, and South Africa extends the valences of postcolonial feminist and queer studies towards a historical examination of South-South interactions in the theory and praxis of sexual rights. Analyzing the circumstances of production and the contents of English-language and intermittently bilingual magazines and newsletters published between the late 1970s and the late 1990s, these sources offer a way to examine the convergences and divergences between postcolonial feminist, gay, and lesbian activism. It charts a set of concerns common to feminist, gay, and lesbian activist literature: retrogressive colonial-era legislation impacting the status of women and sexual minorities; a marked increase in sexual violence; piecemeal reproductive freedoms and sexual choice under neoliberalism; the emergence and management of the HIV/AIDS crisis; precariousness of lesbian and transgender concerns within feminist and LGBTQ+ movements; and Non-Governmental Organizations as major actors articulating sexual rights as human rights. This methodologically innovative work is based on archival historical research, analyses of national and international policy documents, close readings of activist publications, and conversations with activists and founding editors. This is an important intervention in the field of gender and sexuality studies and is the winner of the 2020 Feminist Futures, Subversive Histories prize in partnership with the NWSA. The book is key reading for scholars and students in gender, sexuality, comparative literature, and postcolonial studies. Chapter 3 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
