Since the 1960s, the occult in film and television has responded to and reflected society's crises surrounding gender and sexuality. In Desire After Dark, Andrew J. Owens explores media where figures such as vampires and witches make use of their supernatural knowledge in order to queer what otherwise appears to be a normative world. Beginning with the global sexual revolutions of the '60s and moving decade by decade through "Euro-sleaze" cinema and theatrical hardcore pornography, the HIV/AIDS crisis, the popularity of New Age religions and witchcraft, and finally the increasingly explicit sexualization of American cable television, Owens contends that occult media has risen to prominence during the past 60 years as a way of exposing and working through cultural crises about queerness. Through the use of historiography and textual analyses of media from Bewitched to The Hunger, Owens reveals that the various players in occult media have always been well aware that non-normative sexuality constitutes the heart of horror's enduring appeal. Running counter to the received view in virtually all of contemporary psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, Bruce Fink argues that the current obsession with understanding – on the patient’s part as well as on the clinician’s – is excessive insofar as the most essential aim of psychoanalytic treatment is change. Using numerous case studies and clinical vignettes, Fink illustrates that the ability of clinicians to detect the unconscious through slips of the tongue, slurred speech, mixed metaphors, and other instances of "misspeaking" is compromised by an emphasis on understanding the why and wherefore of patients’ symptoms and behavior patterns. André Bazin (French: [baz?~]; 18 April 1918 – 11 November 1958) was an eminent and persuasive French film faultfinder and film scholar. Bazin began to expound on film in 1943 and was a prime supporter of the famous film magazine Cahiers du cinéma in 1951, alongside Jacques Doniol-Valcroze and Joseph-Marie Lo Duca. Bazin's call for target reality, profound center, and absence of montage are connected to his conviction that the understanding of a film or scene ought to be left to the onlooker. This put him contrary to film hypothesis of the 1920s and 1930s, which underscored how the silver screen could control reality. He is also the co-fonder of Cahiers du Cinema which is indeed the pathbreaking journal till date.
