Classical Loop-in-Loop Chains
Author: J.R. Smith
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468491326
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 204
Book Description
ThiS is not only a book of instruction in chainmaking but it is also a work celebrating man's continuous creativity over thousands of years. At times something that man creates has far-reach ing effects; an example that quickly comes to mind is the wheel, which has enabled many devel opments, from pottery to computers. At this point it is important to note that these same wheels could not have been made without metal tools. From early Neolithic times on gold was a favorite choice in the making of jewelry. During the Neolithic period these "shining stones," probably alluvial, were prized. Actually gold was cold worked as if it were a stone. There is a surviving example of cold-worked gold from Catahuyuk (present day Turkey) estimated to have been made in 6500 B. C. There were only four metals on the earth's surface that were found in sufficient quantity to be used: gold, copper, silver, and meteoric iron. An understanding of the malleability of gold, and of the annealing effect of fire, changed jewelry making; new forms were found. Gold was no longer a piece of stone but a material that could be flattened and made very thin. Sheet and foil are the oldest forms of worked gold. The smiths' tools were stone, wood, and horn.

Book Description
Silver Chain is a story of enduring love. Francis wanted to join his five older brothers to go fishing in a wooden boat in the Indian Ocean. Gladys, his mother, objected because he was too young. She brought a silver chain with a pendant of his patron saint St. Francis Xavier, put the chain on Francis' neck and advised him, "Always wear this. It will protect you." Francis made an exceptional catch on his maiden fishing trip. Since that time, he was known as Lucky Francis in the fishing village. Tall and handsome, he was the first in the family to go to college, where he became an athletic champion. Vincent, his roommate in the college hostel was a smart student but shy and insecure. Vincent obtained employment as a high school teacher right after graduation. Francis had to settle for a sales job in a liquor store. An arranged marriage proposal came for Vincent from a girl who lived with her family only four miles from Francis' fishing village. Vincent asked Francis to go along with him to see tall, slender, and beautiful Rose. She was crushed when she found out Vincent was the one who came to see her. Francis watched his best friend marry Rose, the woman who was attracted to him. Two years later, Francis joined the Indian Army. Before he left to North India for training, Francis made a brief visit to Rose's house. Rose was worried about Vincent's self-destructive habits and his lack of concern for her. Vincent had even sold her gold chain. Francis gave his silver chain to Rose. "My mother gave me this. This will give you confidence and courage." Rose accepted the silver chain. "I hope I will be able to return this to you someday." She kissed the silver chain and put it on her neck. The war between China and India on the high Himalayan mountainous area started in October 1962.
