Excerpt from Sierra Club Bulletin, 1927, Vol. 12 Of the big game animals the buffalo were about the least in evi dence, the small Show herd in the pasture near Mammoth Hot Springs being all that were seen by our party, because our trails did not take in the summer range of either Of the main herds. At our camp on the northern end Of Yellowstone Lake we were within fifteen or twenty miles of the wild herd, estimated last year at 125 animals, but the rangers said it might take several days of hard riding to locate any of them. They are really wild, and are rarely seen in summer as they wander through the open valleys and timber on the headwaters of Pelican and Raven creeks, or in winter as they dig in the snow for grass in the Pelican Creek Valley. The tame herd, so called because the animals are kept in a large pasture and fed hay during the winter, were ofi on their summer outing in the mountains; but with the first snows they are rounded up and brought down to the buffalo ranch on Lamar River for the winter. Last year there were about seven hundred in this herd, and each year adds a new crop of calves to more than balance the few losses. In fact, the herd is now so large and requires so much hay for winter-feeding that its further increase, especially of the bulls, offers a serious problem for Superintendent Albright to handle. At his first enthusiastic greeting of the Sierra Club he offered to give each member of the party a buffalo bull to take home. The one con dition of the gifts, however, was that we come and get them, and it seems doubtful if this offer greatly reduces the herd. Excerpt from The Sierra Club Bulletin, Vol. 8: 1911-1912 In dimensions they are equally varied. While they average between four and five feet in length and from two to three inches in breadth, there are individuals among them but a fraction of a foot long and others exceeding twelve or even fifteen feet; and some are less than an inch across, while others - like those in the immediate foreground of the view - span six inches and over. Nor is the breadth always proportionate to the length. Some of the longest are very narrow, some of the shortest very broad. On closer inspection they are seen to consist simply of narrow tracts from which the lichens that otherwise uniformly mottle the rock have been removed, and it becomes plain that it is merely the light color of the unweathered granite thus exposed that makes them prominent. These stripes, then, are not stains at all; rather, they owe their brilliancy to their very stain lessness - to the absence of coloring matter of any sort. Excerpt from Sierra Club Bulletin, Vol. 3: January, 1900 About the first week before the end of the First Session of the University of California, several young men, students of the University, invited me to join them in a camping party for the Yosemite and the High Sierra. The party was to go in regular pioneer style, cooking their own provisions, and sleeping under the open sky whenever a convenient place was found; each man was to bestride his own horse, carry his own bedding behind his saddle, and his clothing, with the exception of one change of underwear, on his back. This was, it is true, a little rougher and harder than anything I had ever undertaken; but still I was fond of adventure, and longed to enjoy the glories of Yosemite and the beauties of the Sierra, and, more than all, to study mountain structure and mountain sculpture, as exhibited there on a magnificent scale. I therefore at once accepted the offer. The party was forthwith organized, ten in number. Mr. Hawkins, who understood something of mountain life, was commissioned to buy the necessary supplies, and the general outfit, such as camp utensils, pack-horse and pack-saddle, and have all in readiness that we might start the very first day after commencement. To while away my idle moments in camp, and to preserve some souvenir of the party, of the incidents, and of the scenery, I jotted down, from time to time, these wayside notes.
