Book Description
The variegated religious and material culture of Thailand, Cambodia and adjacent countries in the Far East always evoke great interest in the minds of the students of human civilization. Since the time of the World War II (1939-1945), these countries have undergone great changes outwardly, i.e. in technology and economic conditions, in social customs and manners, and above all in political identity, but the spirit of the civilization of the region has remained almost unchanged till today. The present work which has no pretention to be a research work on the history and culture of the countries described herein, is a descriptive account with narratives of the author s travels chiefly in Thailand (Siam) and Cambodia along with some excursing in China and Burma, written in an inimitable language and style by an artist. The work covers the whole socio-cultural scene of the region, especially the wonderful example of its architecture and sculpture. The author presents most fascinating descriptions of some local ceremonies and festivals which he witnessed during his travels. The author, during his travels, drew numerous sketches, some of which have been included in the book. The sketches are masterpieces of art and are, at lest of equal importance with the text.
