Book Description
The ignition of propane-oxygen mixtures highly diluted with argon has been examined in the region behind a reflected shock wave in a single pulse shock tube. The measurements covered a temperature range of 1250-1600K at pressures varying from 2 to 10 atmospheres for mixture equivalence ratios of 0.125 to 2.0. For these conditions, observed induction times ranged from 12 to 600 microseconds. In one series of tests on a stoichiometric mixture, analyses were made of the shocked gas just prior to and immediately after ignition. These revealed that extensive pyrolysis of the propane preceded ignition. Mixture compositions and test conditions in this investigation were selected in such a manner that the influence of significant parameters on the ignition delay times could be clearly delineated. It was found that the experimental results of more than 150 tests were well correlated. (Author).

Book Description
The Handbook of Shock Waves contains a comprehensive, structured coverage of research topics related to shock wave phenomena including shock waves in gases, liquids, solids, and space. Shock waves represent an extremely important physical phenomena which appears to be of special practical importance in three major fields: compressible flow (aerodynamics), materials science, and astrophysics. Shock waves comprise a phenomenon that occurs when pressure builds to force a reaction, i.e. sonic boom that occurs when a jet breaks the speed of sound. This Handbook contains experimental, theoretical, and numerical results which never before appeared under one cover; the first handbook of its kind. The Handbook of Shock Waves is intended for researchers and engineers active in shock wave related fields. Additionally, R&D establishments, applied science & research laboratories and scientific and engineering libraries both in universities and government institutions. As well as, undergraduate and graduate students in fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, and physics. Key Features* Ben-Dor is known as one of the founders of the field of shock waves* Covers a broad spectrum of shock wave research topics* Provides a comprehensive description of various shock wave related subjects* First handbook ever to include under one separate cover: experimental, theoretical, and numerical results

Book Description
Detailed one-dimensional calculations have been performed to simulate weak and strong ignition in reflected shock tube experiments in hydrogen-oxygen-argon mixtures. It is found that the experiment and simulations agree well in the strong ignition case studied. In the weak ignition case, the simulations show the same qualitative behavior as the experiment. Here ignition starts at a distance away from the reflecting wall at a time much earlier than the calculated chemical induction time. This latter effect is shown to arise because of the sensitivity of the chemical induction time to fluctuations in the calculation. In the calculations these fluctuations arise from small numerical inaccuracies. In experiments, they can arise from a number of sources including nonuniformities in the incident shock wave leading to non-uniform reflection, thermal conduction to the walls, and interactions with boundary layers. Book Description
Recently, there have been significant advances in the fields of high-enthalpy hypersonic flows, high-temperature gas physics, and chemistry shock propagation in various media, industrial and medical applications of shock waves, and shock-tube technology. This series contains all the papers and lectures of the 19th International Symposium on Shock Waves held in Marseille in 1993. They will be published in four topical volumes, each containing papers on related topics, and preceded by an overview written by a leading international expert. The volumes may be purchased independently.

Book Description
In recent years, emissions from transportation engines have been studied widely because of the contribution of such engines to atmospheric pollution. During this period the amounts of pollutants emitted, the mechanism of their formation, and means of controlling emissions have been investigated in industrial and government laboratories, as well as at universities. The results of these investigations have generally been published as individual articles in journals, transactions, meeting proceedings, and, frequently, in company reports. This proliferation of technical information makes it difficult for workers in the field to keep abreast of all developments. For this reason, the editors felt the need for a book which would survey the existing state of knowledge in wide, albeit selected areas, and would provide a guide to the relevant literature. This book is intended to fulfill this function. It is recognized that all aspects of transportation engine emissions cannot be explored in a single volume. In this book attention is focused primarily on sources and mechanisms of emission formation within the combustion process, and on measurement techniques. Beyond this objective, no re strictions were placed on the authors. Within the framework of the general theme each author has been free to treat his subject as he saw fit. The editors have not strived to replace by uniformity the highly personal and attractive divergences of style. Considerable efforts were made, however, to ensure clarity and minimum overlap between the chapters.

Book Description
A detailed study was made of ignition delay times in ethane-oxygen-argon mixtures behind a reflected shock wave as indicated by pressure and light emission observation. Measured induction times ranged from 20-600 microsec over a temperature interval of 1235 - 1660K and associated pressures of from 2-8 atm. To elucidate composition effects, the equivalence ratio of the test mixture were varied from 0.5 - 2.0 in approximately 95% dilution with argon. (Author).
