This book presents the stories of the first six generations of the Richardson branch of the author's family in North America. The story begins in 1774 when John Richardson travels from Yorkshire, England to what became Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. Settling on land originally homesteaded by politically displaced Acadians, John and two subsequent generations of Christopher's spend their lives farming in Sackville. In 1883, Robert Hay, John's great grandson, moves his family from their farm in Sackville to a homestead 3 miles east of Custer City, South Dakota in the heart of the Black Hills. While failing in its goal of saving Robert's wife Annie from Tuberculosis, it brought our family to the American West. After his death in 1897, three of Robert's sons, Fred, Bob, and Will, joined forces to create the Richardson Brothers Ranch in the Big Muddy Valley in what is now Sheridan County, Montana.

The headquarters of the military department to which I was assigned when relieved from duty at New Orleans was at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and on the 5th of September I started for that post. In due time I reached St. Louis, and stopped there a day to accept an ovation tendered in approval of the course I had pursued in the Fifth Military District—a public demonstration apparently of the most sincere and hearty character. From St. Louis to Leavenworth took but one night, and the next day I technically complied with my orders far enough to permit General Hancock to leave the department, so that he might go immediately to New Orleans if he so desired, but on account of the yellow fever epidemic then prevailing, he did not reach the city till late in November. My new command was one of the four military departments that composed the geographical division then commanded by Lieutenant-General Sherman. This division had been formed in 1866, with a view to controlling the Indians west of the Missouri River, they having become very restless and troublesome because of the building of the Pacific railroads through their hunting-grounds, and the encroachments of pioneers, who began settling in middle and western Kansas and eastern Colorado immediately after the war.

The 2nd North Carolina Cavalry fought its first major battle in its home state at New Bern on March 14, 1862, and narrowly escaped with its men and reputation intact. The regiment was nearly decimated in the Gettysburg Campaign, but was rebuilt and later fought with Robert E. Lee's cavalry in most major battles, including Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, with only a handful of men. This history covers not only the 2nd North Carolina Cavalry's accomplishments and failures, but the events going on around them which influenced their actions and performance. This “anthropological history” tells the story of homesteading and community organization in the Canadian-American West through personal reminiscences and locally written histories. John W. Bennett and Seena B. Kohl interpret those stories through the lenses of history and social science, and they present a view of settlement experience as one phase of the evolving postfrontier society and culture of western North America. Settling the Canadian-American West, 1890–1915 contains a synthesis of Canadian and U.S. settlement experiences giving, to the extent possible, equal space to both sides of the international boundary. The experiences of people in these adjacent territories were virtually identical, with emigrant populations from the same countries and socioeconomic strata. Among other aspects of the homesteading experience, the authors explore the “interactive adaptation” that developed in the West.
