Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare in His Age Such a picture was not my purpose. I wanted to discover and describe what was happening in England, and even further afield, while Shakespeare was doing this and writing that. We all know that he was finishing Henry V at the time Of Essex's Irish campaign; but what was happening, what were other men doing - statesmen, courtiers, churchmen, sailors, poets and composers - when he married at the age Of eighteen, when he arrived in London, when he was writing Love's Labour's Lost, Macbeth and Pericles, and when he was collaborating with Fletcher? The only thing that matters, of course, is the writing, but it follows that anything that illuminates it is Of some value, and such a synthesis seems to me to be particularly illuminating. King yohn gains by being seen in the light Of the death of Drake, the Cadiz Raid, the Islands Voyage and the poetry of Donne, and Lear in that Of the Hampton Court Conference, Gun powder Plot and Volpone. Then, against this shifting scene Shake speare himself becomes a more comprehensible figure, and, after all, the scene itself is not the least interesting in our history. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare and His Age: Six Short Studies I may have met with must be ascribed to the greatness of my subject and to the honest attention of the audience. The suddenness of my call from France to Egypt, and the grievous lack of material in the young library of the University, made my task more difficult to accomplish, andi was forced to trust to a fickle memory more than I care to do. The candid critic is therefore prayed to accord that courteous indulgence which has always been shown by my students. Book Description
Excerpt from The Age of Shakespeare The first great English poet was the father of English tragedy and the creator of English blank verse. Chaucer and Spenser were great writers and great men: they shared between them every gift which goes to the making of a poet except the one which alone can make a poet, in the proper sense of the word, great. Neither pathos nor humour nor fancy nor invention will suffice for that: no poet is great as a poet whom no one could ever pretend to recognise as sublime. Sublimity is the test of imagination as distin guished from invention or from fancy: and the first English poet whose powers can be called sublime was Christopher Marlowe. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare in the Eighteenth Century At no time since his death has Shakespeare not been placed upon a pinnacle by himself as the greatest of all English writers. But each age has its own point of View, its own special interests, its characteristic method of treatment; and no age can ever say the last word on anything that is a living and life-giving force. Say the last word on Shakespeare, and Shakespeare is dead. There can never be finality in the criticism of a great author. The truth and the beauty embodied in his work exercise the taste and the acumen of one critic, and remain undiminished and untarnished for the next. All the best criticism of the present day. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare So Shakespeare has come to his own, as an English man of letters; he has been separated from his fellows, and recognised for what he is: perhaps the greatest poet of all time; one who has said more about humanity than any other writer, and has said it better whose works are the study and admiration of divines and philosophers, of soldiers and states men, so that his continued vogue upon the stage is the smallest part of his immortality; who has touched many spirits finely to fine issues, and has been for.
