Book Description
Benjamin Tanner has lost it all. His wife is sleeping around, he is newly unemployed, and worst of all, he just lost his daughter to the great beyond. He has no purpose and nothing to live for or so the voices tell him. The Red Devils hide the pain, but the pills are quickly turning against him.Voices chant of his demise. They're telling him to use the gun in his hand and end it all. Ben wanders the night in search for answers while the Red Devils burn his world into a twisted fantasy of good and evil. As the night progresses the Red Devils release their poison and Ben's mind swells with pain and anger. The revolver in his hand pulses with a wicked energy. By the end of the darkness, he may just use the gun on himself. At least it would make the voices stop; it would make the pain stop, too. How had it come to this? Why had he become the victim of so many pointless misfortunes? But Tanner is not alone. He is being chased by a gang of dark and vicious characters who wish him harm, but there are others-those who mean him well. They stand beside him and battle for his broken soul before the Red Devil's take over and it is too late. Follow Benjamin Tanner as he desperately searches for meaning in the emptiness and takes a final stand against his pain.

Book Description
Tracing the mayhem caused by a handful of anti-Communist watchdogs who in 1950 created the blacklist in radio and TV, David Everitt makes clear that the conflict over free speech was not a simplistic morality tale of persecutors and the persecuted, as routinely portrayed. The blacklisters, though excessive and destructive, were not deluded hunters of an imaginary menace. A Shadow of Red is a cautionary tale about civil liberties in a time of emergency, and a vivid example of the polarized political battle over who controls the media, a battle that continues to this day.

Book Description
For more than 150 years, the story of the First West Tennessee Cavalry U.S.A. (renamed the Sixth Tennessee Cavalry) has been told from the perspectives of Col. Fielding Hurst, his critics, and his defenders. Now the story of this misunderstood irregular Union cavalry regiment is portrayed through the eyes and emotions of his second-in-command, Lt. Col. William K.M. Breckenridge. Long silenced by death and the mist of history, Breckenridge's journal retells the regiment's story. His contemporary voice and facts drawn from period documents provide a far clearer portrait than previously available. Through careful and detailed research, In The Shadow of the Devil debunks many legends and folklore regarding both Fielding Hurst and the First West Tennessee Cavalry. Further, the reputations of the soldiers themselves are somewhat restored as the specific war crimes of a few are detailed. A life too long hidden by death and the fog of history emerges with a strong and compelling voice. Now allowed to speak, that voice tells a story both convincing and historically significant.

Book Description
The relationship of myth to literature has largely been overshadowed in contemporary theory by perspectives of a linguistic or sociological orientation and by relativist, sometimes negatory, stances on all searches for meaning. This book attempts to show that myth criticism and critical theories of more recent provenance are not irreconcilable. While taking into consideration some of the more influential tenets of structuralist, post-structuralist, Marxist and feminist theory, it applies a post-Jungian ('archetypal') approach to illustrating the perennial nature of a particular myth (the Fall of Man) in two main traditions (Mesopotamian and Christian) and in the contemporary novel in English. The discussions of five major novels by William Golding, Patrick White, Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie, and Wilson Harris not only serve to expand the mythological insights achieved in the first part of the book; they also suggest the incommensurability of imaginal, novelistic life with mythology's age-old intuitions about the human condition. Myth criticism emerges from this book as an irreplaceable vantage-point from which man's lapsarian predicament can be scrutinized synchronically as archaic wisdom, contemporary anxiety, and post-colonial commitment to the building of a new human city.

Book Description
Using a broad array of historical and literary sources, this book presents an unprecedented detailed history of the superhero and its development across the course of human history. How has the concept of the superhero developed over time? How has humanity's idealization of heroes with superhuman powers changed across millennia—and what superhero themes remain constant? Why does the idea of a superhero remain so powerful and relevant in the modern context, when our real-life technological capabilities arguably surpass the imagined superpowers of superheroes of the past? The Evolution of the Costumed Avenger: The 4,000-Year History of the Superhero is the first complete history of superheroes that thoroughly traces the development of superheroes, from their beginning in 2100 B.C.E. with the Epic of Gilgamesh to their fully entrenched status in modern pop culture and the comic book and graphic novel worlds. The book documents how the two modern superhero archetypes—the Costumed Avengers and the superhuman Supermen—can be traced back more than two centuries; turns a critical, evaluative eye upon the post-Superman history of the superhero; and shows how modern superheroes were created and influenced by sources as various as Egyptian poems, biblical heroes, medieval epics, Elizabethan urban legends, Jacobean masques, Gothic novels, dime novels, the Molly Maguires, the Ku Klux Klan, and pulp magazines. This work serves undergraduate or graduate students writing papers, professors or independent scholars, and anyone interested in learning about superheroes.
