This special issue of Ethnohistory explores the relationships among sexuality, power, and desire in colonial Mesoamerica. Investigating conflicts over sexuality, the essays illustrate the importance of sexual behaviors and desires in negotiating identities and complex power relations in the Mesoamerican world. Taken together, they make a compelling argument that an understanding of the role of sexuality is as essential to the study of Latin America as is knowledge about political economy, social organization, ethnicity, and gender. One contributor considers a criminal case in seventeenth-century Mexico that demonstrates that the negotiation of homosexual identity was much more complex than the model of domination and submission often believed to structure Latin American male homosexual relationships. Another contributor examines how priests in Mayan communities attempted to use the confessional and confessional manuals to promote their own notions of sexual desire and ownership of indigenous women, only to have their efforts turned against them, with Mayan women using the texts to assert strategic dominance over the priests. Yet another essay, focusing on the treatment of a hermaphrodite in late colonial Guatemala, examines how the hermaphrodite's traits undermined or called into question Enlightenment-era ideas about sex and gender. Non-reproductive sex practices in Asia have historically been a source of fascination, prurient or otherwise, for Westerners, who being either Catholic or Protestant, were often struck by what they perceived as the widespread promiscuity and licentiousness of native inhabitants. Graphic descriptions, and pious denunciations, of sodomy, bestiality, transvestitism, and incest, abound in Western travel narratives, missionary accounts, and ethnographies. But what constituted indigenous sexual morality, and how was this influenced by Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Islam, and Christianity over time and place? What sex practices were tolerated or even encouraged by society, community, and religious ritual, and what acts were considered undesirable, transgressive and worthy of punishment? Sexual Diversity in Asia, c. 600-1950 is the first book to foreground same- sex acts and pleasure seeking in the histories of India, China, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia. European literary, artistic, and anthropological representation has long viewed the Pacific as the site of heterosexual pleasures. The received wisdom of these accounts is based on the idea of female bodies unrestrained by civilization. In a revisionist history of the Pacific zone and some of its preeminent Western imaginists, Lee Wallace suggests that the fantasy of the male body, rather than of the free-loving female, provides the underlying libidinal structure for many of the classic "encounter" narratives from Cook to Melville. The subject of Sexual Encounters is sexual fantasy, particularly male homoerotic fantasy found in the literature and art of South Sea exploration, colonization, and settlement. Working at the boundaries of a number of disciplines such as queer theory, anthropology, postcolonial studies, and history, Wallace engages in subversive readings of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Pacific voyage journals (Cook in Hawaii and a Russian expedition to the Marquesas), an argument concerning Gauguin's treatment of female figures, and a discussion of homosexuality and Samoan male-to-female transgenderism. These phenomena, Wallace asserts, demonstrate the continuity and dissonance between Western and Pacific sexual categories. She reconstructs Pacific history through the inevitable entanglement of metropolitan and indigenous sexual regimes and ultimately argues for the importance of the Pacific in defining modern sexual categories.

Even though the fantastic (in its most inclusive definition) has been a part of our culture for as long as it exists, it has not been a prominent feature of European academic interest. With its inherent transgressive moment the fantastic allows for an ideal space of the cultural negotiation of political, social and physical boundaries, which should place it at the center of popular cultural research, not as is the case, at its periphery. But the commencing boom of fantastic themes in contemporary media production has facilitated a paradigmatic change in research, prompting a wide interest in the fantastic in all its forms, from fantasy to horror, from fairy tale to science fiction. This volume addresses this growing interest by reviewing the status of research on the fantastic in Europe so far and by providing a necessary outlook for the future. The period from 1960 to 1986 was distinguished by the debate over decriminalization of sexual acts between males. In the 1960s homosexual men faced prison sentences if they were sexually active, and so they made themselves invisible. By 1986 they were demanding their rights and the nation's attention. This change had come after years of debate. The New Zealand Homosexual Law Reform Society and the gay liberation movement actively sought reform. Many within society actively opposed it, and the issue became a catalyst for a significant rift in the churches. Intense lobbying and vehement opposition marked the fifteen months before the Homosexual Law Reform Bill was passed in July 1986. Although Kierkegaad provided many a puzzle for his biographers, one would be wrong to assume Kierkegaard invariably lied when he claimed to be telling the truth. Tying Kierkegaard's baffling misogyny, and ultimately his misogamy, to the existence of an inner mysterium, The Neither/Nor of the Second Sex navigates between the Charybdis of an allegedly insurmountable gulf between works and biography and the Scylla of the biographical fallacy, a peril whose threat raised greater alarms in Kierkegaard. Celine Leon draws her conclusions by paying close attention to the texts and by carefully distinguishing between author and pseudonyms. She only brings works and life together when Kierkegaard ambivalently plays with the former in order to impart something of the secret lying at the core of his being, to reverse Sartre's famous formulation, to communicate at the heart of hiddenness. Leon shows how Kierkegaard-a writer whose views on other subjects she holds in high regard-projected his lack onto a particular woman, Regina Olsen, his one time fiancee and lifelong obsession, then onto all women, and ultimately, regarding his own exceptional status as normative, elected to ban the heterosexual relation altogether. This is not, however, the same as saying that-notwithstanding the religious development and the enormous production whose twin onset he ascribed to the rupture with Regina-Kierkegaard did not do so at an egregious personal cost.
