Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons Twelve In the 26th Psalm, and at the 14th verse, you will read these words: - "The Secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him; and He Will Show Them His Covenant." The heading of this Psalm is "A Psalm of David," and, being a Psalm of his, we may expect to find in it, his thoughts, his feelings, and his experiences. It has been divided into three parts, thus: "David's confidence in prayer;" "he prayeth for remission of sins;" and "for help in affliction." Thus threefold division of the Psalm may be fairly justified by what we find recorded in the Psalm itself. He expresses his confidence in God in the first two verses thus: "Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul, O my God, I trust in Thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me." Prayer thus based upon confidence in God, you have to the end of the 6th verse. He had been taught by the Spirit not to trust in an arm of flesh, nor in man, nor in the will of man, nor in any creature; but in the Lord His God. The Lord alone is the confidence of His people, and He will help them in all times of need. In the second part of the Psalm, he prayeth for remission of sins; as in the 7th verse: "Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to Thy mercy remember Thou me for Thy goodness' sake, O Lord." And in the 11th verse: "For Thy Name's sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great" David felt himself to be a sinner, and a great sinner; and this he confesses to his God. He needed a great Saviour, and great forgiveness. He knew that God only could put away his sins, and that too for His own Name's sake. He prays for help and strength from God in all times of his needs and afflictions: as in the 15th and following verses. "Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord: " here again the Lord is his confidence, - he is looking unto Him. "For He shall pluck my feet out of the net. Book Description
Excerpt from Twelve Select Sermons In compliance with the wish of many friends I have consented to the publication of the following Addresses. I deeply feel how partially and insufficiently the Glorious Gospel of the blessed God is represented in them, but I lay them at the Master's feet, praying, and asking all my Christian friends to pray, that they may be the means in their printed form of winning more souls to Christ than they have been when spoken. Book Description
Excerpt from Twelve Sermons Ahab, the king of Samaria, had taken a fancy to the vineyard of Naboth, which lay hard by his palace. He made a proposition to N aroth for the purchase of the vineyard. Naboth, not out of any wilfulness or obstinacy; but out of a natural and laudable desire to preserve in his family that which had descended to him from his ancestors, re fused, saying, The Lord forbid it me, that I should give unto thee the inheritance of my fathers. Book Description
Excerpt from Twelve Cambridge Sermons IT was Professor Mayor's usual practice, after preaching in his College Chapel or the 'university Church, to print the sermon, with abundant annotations, and distribute copies among his friends: Twelve of these sermons are here reprinted, just as he issued theml, with all the notes and all the quotations. Neither could be spared. If the notes are an embellishment, the quotations are of the very tissue of the work. Mayor delivered the utterance of other men with much more emphasis and expression than he could bring himself to put into his own, and even when he used the same passage a second time, there was always something in the setting that gave it distinction. The business of the editor has merely been to select and see through the Press such discourses as exhibit in clearest light the preacher's mind at different stages in his long ministry. (matthew 5: The fifth chapter of Matthew opens with these words: And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain; and when he was set, His disciples came unto Him; and He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying. Then follow the blessings, or Beatitudes, being the first words which the Lord uttered in what is known as the Sermon on the Mount; and the first of this Sermon, as well as the first of the Beatitudes, is, Blessed are the poor in spirit; for their's is the king dom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is composed of those who are poor in spirit, and they are blessed in the possession of it; of them is the kingdom of heaven. But let us review briefly the opening words of the chapter before proceeding to a consideration of the text.
