Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons on Important Subjects, Vol. 2 of 3 The apostle illustrates this point in 1 Cor. X. Where he cautions the Corinthians against joining with idolaters in their religious festivals, be cause they could not do it without holding communion with those de mons in honour of whom they were celebrated His argument is to this purpose: That as in the Lord's supper we hold a communion with Christ, and as the Jews in their sacred feasts communicated with God at his altar, so' in these idolatrous feasts they held a religious comme nion with the idol.' And this supposes that in the Lord's supper we really have. Communion with Christ. See ver. 20, 21. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons, Upon Various Subjects and Occasions This matter would be sufficient] y clear, had we only the dictates of reason to govern us in our judgment. But we have the testimony of God himself. It is plainly to be seen, and it is solemnly communicated upon the pages of his Word. He hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness, by that man whom he hath or dained, whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in. That he hath raised him from the dead. If then it is cer tain, that God will judge the world in righteousness, and, that he has appointed a day to attend to the business, the question in our text is of the most solemn import; and ought never to be out of our minds. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons and Discourses on Several Important Subjects in Divinity So great was his delight in his Master's Work, and so earnest his desire to be found occupied therein, when he should be called hence, that he preached two or three Sabbaths from a. Window in the manse to the people sitting without, after that he was no longer able to go to the kirk. And as the two Sabbaths, or three at most, in which he was, by his growing indisposition, laid aside from his public work, were very heavy upon him; so his Master was pleased to call him home on the Saturday, May 20, 1732, to celebrate the eternal Sabbath in that place where the inhabitant shall not say any more, I am sick. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons on Bible Subjects, Vol. 3 of 3 Genesis xxxu., 28, 29. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. The complexion of this story is peculiarly Jewish. It contains three points which are especially interesting to every Jew in a national point of view. It explained to him why he was called Israelite. It traces the origin Of his own name, Israelite, to a distant ancestor, who had signally exhibited religious strength, and been, in the language Of those times, a wrestler with God, from whence he had Obtained the name Israel. It casts much deep and curious interest round an otherwise insignificant Village, Peniel, where his transaction had taken place, and which derived its name from it, Peniel, the face of God. And, besides, it explained the origin of a singular custom, which might seem a superstitious one, Of not suffering a particular muscle to be eaten, and regarding it with a kind Of religious awe, as the part in which Jacob was said by tradition to have been injured, by the earnest tension of his frame during this struggle. SO far all is Jewish, narrow, merely of local Interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons on Various Subjects, Preached at the Church in Barton Square, Salem, Mass NO sound and reflecting mind can for a moment doubt the existence of a God. Nature every where proclaims him. The creation determines the being of the Creator; and the countless new existences, which are every where and constantly springing into life, demonstrate his active agency and power. The in visible things of Him are understood by the things that are made. But the want which most Oppresses the human mind is to know more of the divine nature and Character to learn something on which it may securely repose its trust and hopes. Man lives, but life is not the fruit of his own will or power. It is a gift imparted by some one else. That must be God in whom all things had their origin. Man's life is sustained from day to day, but not by his own pleasure. All that he can do is to exercise some humble instrumentality in supplying the outward means of sustenance. His life ceases at the will of another. Who is this invisible Being on whom he is thus absolutely dependent for every effort of the body and every exercise of the mind; for what he is; for all he has; for life, for death? Who is this great Being with whom he stands connected in this intimate relation of life and depend ence? In a word, who is God, from whom all things proceeded, by whom all are sustained, to whom all are subject? The want of this knowledge is that, which rests more heavily than any other upon the human heart the desire of this knowledge is that, which, more than any other, burns in the thoughtful mind. Book Description
Excerpt from The New Things of God Sermons Its newness lies in the fact, not only that we are living in an age of new thought, but that growing experience is ever leading Christians to new views of God and His love which are invariably accompanied by something of new ness in the understanding of God's Word. In this way we are getting our new conception of Christ. As the sermons have not been unattended with evidence of blessing to some who heard them, it is my earnest hope that there may be blessing in them also for some who may read.
