Book Description
Would you use complementary and alternative medicines (CAMS)? Well, research has shown that up to three quarters of patients with cancer may at least supplement their treatment with such therapies, spending as much on CAMS as conventional drugs. How do you decide? This book provides a full range of perspectives on CAMS from patients and CAMS practitioners to conventional doctors who oppose the use of these alternative treatments because of the lack of evidence of efficacy and safety. Then there are the CAMS researchers, educators and regulators who view CAMS from different perspectives. The broad array of opinions build a complete picture of the issues for discerning readers to be adequately informed to make up their minds and draw their own conclusions.

Book Description
This book describes and explains how caring for adolescents and young adults with cancer (AYA) has developed into what is now a recognized and distinct field of nursing practice. It captures current innovative nursing practices and interventions which have developed over the past 25 years across the globe and are supported by research and evidence achieved in many European and international oncology settings. By outlining and describing educational needs of the AYA cancer nursing profession, this book supports its education and professional development for the nursing profession and serves to develop and disseminate nurses’ competencies worldwide. During the last decade, AYA have gained increased attention in healthcare. Today, it is recognized that AYA with cancer have distinct needs that are different to both children and older adults. Young people are in a unique developmental and transitional phase of their lives; thus, their treatment, perspectives and experiences have been addressed in research and the body of knowledge is growing accordingly. Some books are available that describe AYA cancer care, service delivery and aspects of age appropriate care but this volume will be the first to focus on how nurses contribute to AYA cancer care in practice. It will appeal to the AYA clinical nurses in cancer care, as well as to multidisciplinary healthcare professionals and healthcare professionals who support formal nursing education programmes, training and development in practice.

The text offers an evidence-based approach to organising, evaluating and revising the processes that constitute a health service, based on systematising care processes for specific clinical case types. Managing Clinical Processes in Health Services will be invaluable to those integrating and improving systems of clinical process management across the organisation"--Provided by publisher.

Book Description
In the United States, approximately 14 million people have had cancer and more than 1.6 million new cases are diagnosed each year. However, more than a decade after the Institute of Medicine (IOM) first studied the quality of cancer care, the barriers to achieving excellent care for all cancer patients remain daunting. Care often is not patient-centered, many patients do not receive palliative care to manage their symptoms and side effects from treatment, and decisions about care often are not based on the latest scientific evidence. The cost of cancer care also is rising faster than many sectors of medicine--having increased to $125 billion in 2010 from $72 billion in 2004--and is projected to reach $173 billion by 2020. Rising costs are making cancer care less affordable for patients and their families and are creating disparities in patients' access to high-quality cancer care. There also are growing shortages of health professionals skilled in providing cancer care, and the number of adults age 65 and older--the group most susceptible to cancer--is expected to double by 2030, contributing to a 45 percent increase in the number of people developing cancer. The current care delivery system is poorly prepared to address the care needs of this population, which are complex due to altered physiology, functional and cognitive impairment, multiple coexisting diseases, increased side effects from treatment, and greater need for social support. Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care: Charting a New Course for a System in Crisis presents a conceptual framework for improving the quality of cancer care. This study proposes improvements to six interconnected components of care: (1) engaged patients; (2) an adequately staffed, trained, and coordinated workforce; (3) evidence-based care; (4) learning health care information technology (IT); (5) translation of evidence into clinical practice, quality measurement and performance improvement; and (6) accessible and affordable care. This report recommends changes across the board in these areas to improve the quality of care. Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care: Charting a New Course for a System in Crisis provides information for cancer care teams, patients and their families, researchers, quality metrics developers, and payers, as well as HHS, other federal agencies, and industry to reevaluate their current roles and responsibilities in cancer care and work together to develop a higher quality care delivery system. By working toward this shared goal, the cancer care community can improve the quality of life and outcomes for people facing a cancer diagnosis.

Book Description
Ever wondered if your patient''s new symptoms are a manifestation of metastatic disease, treatment effects or are altogether unrelated to the cancer diagnosis; whether herbal remedies interact with cancer treatment; when to refer for genetic testing; or how to provide informed advice regarding dietary and lifestyle modifications?. This volume answers these and many other questions, spanning from cancer prevention to palliative care. Each chapter is comprehensively referenced, to allow the reader to explore related fields in more detail. The book is unique in summarizing a large amount of information that is beyond conventional oncology textbooks. While cancer is treated by multidisciplinary teams of medical oncologists, hematologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists, other specialists are called upon to treat symptoms, side effects or other diseases that can occur concurrently with cancer. In addition to the physical challenges brought about by a cancer diagnosis, patients and their relatives need sensitive and skilled psychosocial support throughout the cancer journey. The book brings together specialists from a wide range of medical, surgical, psychological and supportive specialties, while keeping the focus on the interdisciplinary management of cancer. Sample Chapter(s). Foreword (57 KB). Chapter 1: Cancer and Tobacco: Its Effects on Individuals and Populations (810 KB). Contents: Cancer Prevention: Cancer and the Epidemiologist; Interdisciplinary Management Issues in Cancer Treatment: Beyond Cancer Treatment; Cancer and the Surgeon; Cancer and the Physician; Cancer and the Geneticist; Surviving Cancer: Survivorship Issues; Cancer, Palliative Care and End of Life Issues. Book Description
The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program has played a key role in developing new and improved cancer therapies. However, the program is falling short of its potential, and the IOM recommends changes that aim to transform the Cooperative Group Program into a dynamic system that efficiently responds to emerging scientific knowledge; involves broad cooperation of stakeholders; and leverages evolving technologies to provide high-quality, practice-changing research.
