White, in his annual report dated June 20, 1871, to the Board of Trustees of Cornell University, said: "I think the time has arrived for adding to our other departments a College of Architecture." The Board of Trustees thereupon (Proceedings, June 21, 1871)took action as follows: "On motion of President White, resolved, that a Department of Architecture be established at the University and that the executive committee be authorized, on recommendation of the Committee of this Board on Choice of Faculty, to elect a Professor of Architecture."
