Book Description
This book presents the structure of Hindi keeping in view the sociolinguistic context of language use. It includes descriptions of sounds, devices of word formation, rules of phrase and sentence construction and conventions of language use in spoken and written texts incorporating the insights gained by application of recent linguistic theories. The account presented here, however, is free from abstruse technical vocabulary and modes of presentation that aim at justifying a particular linguistic model. This volume is primarily designed as a source of reference for linguists and educators who want to be better informed about the forms and functions of Hindi, and a resource for students and teachers of Hindi. Hindi, the official language of the Republic of India, is the second most widely spoken language with approximately three hundred and fifty million speakers. In its diasporic contexts, it is spoken in Africa, Australia, Europe, Fiji, Guyana, Surinam, Trinidad, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States. An Indo-European language by genetic affiliation, Hindi shares many characteristics with Austro-Asiatic, Dravidian, and Sino-Tibetan languages of the subcontinent. In addition, Hindi has assimilated features of Arabic, Persian and English in a variety of its functionally determined styles.

Book Description
This book provides a fairly comprehensive description of the Morphology of Hindi. This description is located in the theory proposed by Ford and Singh. They question some of the most celebrated concepts of morphology and build a theory of morphological relatedness around the word as the basic unit and a set of bidirectional Word Formation Strategies. Morphology is essentially regarded as the study of relationships obtaining among formally and semantically related words. These Word Formation Strategies constitute extremely complex networks of word-relatedness. Access to a single member of a given network can activate the whole network. It examines critically not only the concepts used in traditional morphology but also the work done on Hindi morphology during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In addition to examining intra-and intercategorial relationships among Hindi nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, the book includes sections on morphophonemic changes, minimization of morphological marks, non-morphemic morphemes and multiple affixation.

Book Description
Meaning, being the core of the existential reality of language, need to be comprehended and analyzed, properly grasped and talked about. The first part of this book, Semantics, Stylistics and Pedagogics, is planned to strengthen our comprehension of the ‘meaning’ facet of language at ‘isolable’ level (lexical) and also at ‘combinatorial’ level (discoursal). The way ‘meaning’ is viewed and analyzed at different times and in different intellecting traditions is presented in the first three chapters which constitute the part called Semantics. The fourth chapter constitutes the second part of the book—Stylistics—dealing with the way ‘meaning’ is juiced out from a text. One can even say that we actually juice out meaning for a text because the meaning is actually a response from the aesthetic and cognitive capabilities of a reader. So the ‘grasping’ of meaning of a text is again a dynamic process comprising denotative, connotative and suggestive responses. The third part of the book is ‘Pedagogics’ which subsumes ‘androgogics’ too. Here we see how the language teacher who has comprehended and grasped ‘meaning’ conveys it to the student in the classroom. This conveying is actually facilitating comprehension and grasping in the minds of the students.
