Book Description
Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and Crohn’s disease (CD) occur worldwide and are life-long chronic conditions. The symptoms, which include abdominal pain and frequent diarrhea, cause limitations in life. Thus, patients with IBD need self-care in accordance with their symptoms, their own commitment to maintaining health, and decisions on symptom management. To strengthen self-care, there is a need for a tool that assesses self-care in patients with IBD, which aims to support the patient dialogue about self-care. The overall aim of this thesis was to develop and evaluate a questionnaire for the clinical assessment of self-care, and to explore self-care in relation to disease activity and to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with IBD. Design and method: The thesis includes four studies, where studies I, II and IV were conducted in Sweden, and study III was conducted in the United States (U.S.). In study I, a descriptive design, interviews were conducted with twenty adult patients, in order to explore self-care in patients with IBD. In study II, the self-care questionnaire was developed and tested with 193 patients with IBD in Sweden. In study III, a crosssectional descriptive design, the self-care questionnaire was translated into English, and the responses of 67 patients in the U.S. were evaluated. Finally, in study IV, a cross-sectional exploratory design was used to explore self-care in relation to patient characteristics, disease activity, and HRQOL among 234 patients. For a total of 421 patients, the data was analyzed using content analysis, and descriptive and analytic statistics (studies I, II, III and IV). Results: Among patients with IBD, self-care relates to symptom recognition, handling of symptoms, planning life, and seeking new options. Self-care varied according to how the patient managed daily life with regard to the symptoms of the disease (study I). Based on the results from study I, the self-care questionnaire was developed in Swedish, resulting in a valid and reliable questionnaire comprising 22 items (study II). The questionnaire was translated to English, and performed self-care activities were associated with a lower degree of well-being in relation to age and gender (study III). The patients were taking medication for IBD, paying attention to their intestinal symptoms, adapting their diet, managing their stress, planning their day and avoiding activities (studies III and IV). Self-care was more frequent in patients with CD when it came to paying attention to psychological symptoms; diet adaption; avoiding various activities including sex; and looking for new approaches to living with IBD. A greater degree of self-care activities was associated with a lower degree of HRQOL (IV). Conclusion: The results indicate the importance of identifying the total symptom experience, and of the patient’s need to discuss self-care, in order to strengthen selfcare and achieve better treatment. The self-care questionnaire can be a useful tool to benefit the discussion of self-care for the patient, and to secure health literacy, medication adherence, and HRQOL. The valid and reliable self-care questionnaire is available for patients with IBD at gastroenterology clinics or out-patient clinics, as primary care. Disease activity affects self-care, and consequently the self-care activities.

Book Description
Contrary to what most diets would have you believe, the human body does not recognize all calories as equal. Some foods are used to boost brain power, fuel metabolism, and heal the body—while others are simply stored as fat. In The Calorie Myth, Bailor shows us how eating more of the right kinds of foods and exercising less, but at a higher intensity, is the true formula for burning fat. Why? Because eating high-quality foods balances the hormones that regulate our metabolism. When we eat these foods, our bodies naturally maintain a healthy weight. But when we eat sugar, starches, processed fats, and other poor-quality foods, the body's regulatory system becomes "clogged" and prevents us from burning extra calories. Translation: Those extra 10 pounds aren't the result of eating too much . . . they're the result of eating the wrong foods! Bailor offers clear, comprehensive guidance on what to eat and why, providing an eating plan, recipes, and a simple yet effective exercise regimen. Losing weight doesn't have to mean going hungry or spending hours at the gym. The Calorie Myth offers a radical and effective new model for weight loss and long-term health.

Book Description
Higher education has changed significantly over time. In particular, traditional face-to-face degrees are being revamped in a bid to ensure they stay relevant in the 21st century and are now offered online. The transition for many universities to online learning has been painful—only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing many in-person students to join their virtual peers and professors to learn new technologies and techniques to educate. Moreover, work has also changed with little doubt as to the impact of digital communication, remote work, and societal change on the nature of work itself. There are arguments to be made for organizations to become more agile, flexible, entrepreneurial, and creative. As such, work and education are both traversing a path of immense changes, adapting to global trends and consumer preferences. The Handbook of Research on Future of Work and Education: Implications for Curriculum Delivery and Work Design is a comprehensive reference book that analyzes the realities of higher education today, strategies that ensure the success of academic institutions, and factors that lead to student success. In particular, the book addresses essentials of online learning, strategies to ensure the success of online degrees and courses, effective course development practices, key support mechanisms for students, and ensuring student success in online degree programs. Furthermore, the book addresses the future of work, preferences of employees, and how work can be re-designed to create further employee satisfaction, engagement, and increase productivity. In particular, the book covers insights that ensure that remote employees feel valued, included, and are being provided relevant support to thrive in their roles. Covering topics such as course development, motivating online learners, and virtual environments, this text is essential for academicians, faculty, researchers, and students globally.

Book Description
Nautilus Book Awards Winners for 2007 (category: Self-Help/Psychology/ Personal Growth) "Like many people, Kathleen Hall found that despite great success and material wealth, she had yet to identify purpose, meaning, and balance in her work and her life. She left her Wall Street firm and devoted herself to understanding the relationships between mind, body, and spirit, and between professional and personal fulfillment. Since then, she has studied with great spiritual leaders including the Dalai Lama, Bishop Desmond Tutu, and the exiled Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh. She has also learned from medical experts like Dr. Dean Ornish of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute and Dr. Herbert Benson at the Harvard Mind-Body Institute. Inspired by those diverse influences, Dr. Hall has written A Life in Balance, a guided journey to joy, peace, and an intentional life grounded in the four roots of the SELF: * Serenity. Find what brings us peace, and channel it into everything we do * Exercise. Align the body with energy and health through walking, yoga, martial arts, and more * Love. Build community and relationships that heal others as well as ourselves * Food. Pay attention not just to what we eat, but to what we experience through all our senses Our lives pull us in many different directions; to find happiness, we must first create balance. Filled with wit, wisdom, and compassion, A Life in Balance will help any reader identify and stay true to his or her authentic self."

Book Description
Prioritizing and setting clear boundaries is crucial for achieving balance in all areas of life. Here are some steps to help you in this process: 1. Reflect on your values and priorities: Take time to identify what truly matters to you in each area of your life. Consider your career aspirations, the quality of your relationships, your physical and mental well-being, personal growth goals, and the activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Understanding your values and priorities will guide your decision-making process. 2. Evaluate time and energy commitments: Assess how much time and energy you currently allocate to each area of your life. Are there areas that receive more attention than others? Are there activities or responsibilities that are draining your energy? Take note of any imbalances or areas that require adjustment. 3. Set boundaries: Once you have a clear understanding of your priorities, establish boundaries to ensure that each area of your life receives the attention it deserves. This may involve setting specific work hours, designating time for self-care and relaxation, scheduling quality time with loved ones, or blocking off time for personal growth activities. 4. Learn to say no: Saying no is a powerful tool for maintaining balance. Assess requests and obligations that come your way and evaluate whether they align with your priorities. It's okay to decline opportunities or commitments that don't align with your values or would overload your schedule. Remember, saying no to one thing means saying yes to something else that is more important to you. 5. Communicate your boundaries: Clearly communicate your boundaries to others involved in your life, such as your colleagues, family members, and friends. Let them know your limitations, availability, and the importance of respecting your boundaries. Effective communication ensures that others understand and support your efforts to find balance. 6. Regularly reassess and adjust: Life is dynamic, and your priorities may shift over time. Regularly reassess your values and priorities, and make adjustments to your boundaries as needed. Be flexible and open to change, adapting your time and energy allocation to accommodate new circumstances or goals. 7. Practice self-care and self-reflection: Prioritizing self-care is essential for maintaining balance. Take time for activities that nourish your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Additionally, regularly reflect on your progress and evaluate whether your current boundaries and priorities are serving you effectively. Remember, finding balance is a continuous process that requires self-awareness, self-reflection, and ongoing adjustments. By prioritizing and setting clear boundaries, you create a framework that supports a balanced and fulfilling life aligned with your values and aspirations. 2 subject Effective time management is key to achieving balance in all areas of life. Here are some strategies to help you manage your time effectively: 1. Create a schedule: Develop a schedule or routine that includes dedicated time blocks for work, self-care, relationships, hobbies, and rest. Prioritize these areas based on your values and goals. Use digital or physical planners, calendars, or productivity apps to map out your daily, weekly, and monthly schedules. 2. Set realistic goals and priorities: Determine your most important tasks and goals in each area of your life. Break them down into smaller, manageable steps. By focusing on your priorities, you can allocate your time and energy accordingly. 3. Learn to say no: Be mindful of overcommitting yourself. Understand that saying no to tasks or obligations that don't align with your priorities is essential to maintain balance. Evaluate requests or commitments carefully and decline those that don't contribute to your overall well-being and goals. 4. Avoid multitasking: While multitasking may seem productive, it often leads to decreased focus and efficiency. Instead, practice single-tasking by dedicating your attention to one task at a time. This approach allows for better concentration, quality work, and a sense of accomplishment. 5. Delegate and outsource: Recognize tasks that can be delegated or outsourced to others. Delegate responsibilities at work, enlist the help of family members or friends for household chores, or consider outsourcing tasks that can be handled by professionals. This frees up time for activities that align with your priorities. 6. Practice time blocking: Assign specific time blocks for different activities or areas of your life. For example, allocate focused work time in the morning, exercise or self-care time in the afternoon, and quality time with loved ones in the evening. Time blocking helps create structure and ensures that each area receives dedicated attention. 7. Minimize distractions: Identify and minimize distractions that consume valuable time. This may involve turning off notifications on your phone, creating a designated workspace, or using website blockers to limit access to distracting websites or apps during focused work periods. 8. Take breaks and rest: Recognize the importance of breaks and rest in maintaining productivity and well-being. Incorporate regular breaks into your schedule to recharge and rejuvenate. Allow yourself sufficient time for sleep and relaxation to avoid burnout. 9. Regularly review and adjust: Periodically review your schedule and assess whether it aligns with your goals and priorities. Be open to making adjustments as needed to ensure that your time is allocated effectively and in line with your values. By practicing effective time management, setting priorities, and learning to say no, you can create a schedule that allows for a balanced allocation of time and energy across various areas of your life. Remember, finding the right balance may require experimentation and adjustments along the way. Stay flexible, stay focused, and stay committed to managing your time effectively. 3 subject Fostering self-care practices is essential for maintaining balance and overall well-being. Here are some steps to help you make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine: 1. Recognize the importance of self-care: Understand that self-care is not selfish but necessary for your physical, mental, and emotional health. Recognize that by taking care of yourself, you are better equipped to handle the demands of daily life and show up fully in all areas. 2. Identify activities that nourish you: Reflect on activities that bring you joy, relaxation, and a sense of fulfillment. This could include exercise, meditation, yoga, reading, creative pursuits, spending time in nature, journaling, taking baths, or enjoying hobbies. Identify activities that nourish each aspect of your well-being. 3. Prioritize self-care in your schedule: Schedule dedicated time for self-care activities just as you would for any other important commitment. Treat it as a non-negotiable part of your routine. Block out specific time slots in your calendar and guard that time as you would any other appointment or obligation. 4. Practice mindfulness and presence: Be fully present and engaged in your self-care activities. Avoid distractions and immerse yourself in the present moment. Whether it's going for a walk in nature or practicing meditation, focus on the experience and allow yourself to fully enjoy and recharge.
