Book Description
An increasing amount of ammonia slip affects DeNOx technology used to reduce nitrogen oxides emissions from power plants and other stationary sources of NOx emissions, heavy trucks, gasoline and Diesel passenger cars. The control and removal of ammonia emissions in waste streams are required. The process of the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia into nitrogen and water vapour is one of the most promising methods for elimination of toxic ammonia from flue gases. As catalysts for the process hydrotalcite-derived mixed metal oxides were tested. The studies performed in the frame of the research were presented in four scientific papers (Catalysis Letters, Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, Chemik). Mixed metal oxides have been found to be active, selective to nitrogen and stable in ammonia oxidation. Their activity and selectivity strongly depend on chemical and phase composition and their redox properties. Optimum composition of the catalysts guaranteeing high catalytic performance was proposed. The internal SCR (i-SCR) mechanism was investigated for the reaction performed over the studied catalysts.

Surface Properties and Catalysis by Non-Metals

Pages : 571
Book Description
In the field of heterogeneous catalysis. it is convenient to distinguish. in a perfectly unjustified and over··simplified way. bet:leen metal catalysts. 2nd the other catalysts. The fj.J"st are easy to define : they are those in which a reduced metal is the active phase. It is thus easy to circumscribe. by exclusion, the other class namely the "non-metals". We have adopted this definition for the sake of our colleagues working on catalysis by metals, and to avoid a lengthy title like "sm' face pl"operties and catalysts by transi tion metal oxides. sulftdes, carbides, nitriles, etc. Defined in this manner, non-metal catalysts represented, in 1980, 84 wt. % of the industrial heterogeneous catalysts. To be more specific, this proportion corresponds to catalysts which, under the working conditions in the industrial ?lant. contain their catalytically active metallic elements in a non-reduced state. It should however be recalled that most metal catalysts are supported on oxides, which, often, repl'esent over 90% (sometimes 99.4% in the case of the platinum reforming catalysts) of the total weight.

Catalytic Ammonia Synthesis
Author: J.R. Jennings
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475795920
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 462
Book Description
The phenomenon of catalysis is found in many homogeneous and heterogeneous systems undergoing chemical change, where it effects the rates of approach to the equilibrium state in processes as diverse as those found in the stars, the earth's mantle, living organisms, and the various chemistries utilized by industry. The economies and the living standards of both developed and developing countries depend to varying degrees upon the efficacy of their chemical industries. Con sequently, this century has seen a wide exploration and expansion of catalytic chemistry together with an intensive investigation of specific, essential processes like those contributing to life-supporting agricultures. Prime among the latter must surely be the "fixation" of atmospheric nitrogen by catalytic hydrogenation to anhydrous ammonia, still the preferred synthetic precursor of the nitrogenous components of fertilizers. In each decade contemporary concepts and techniques have been used to further the understanding, as yet incomplete, of the catalyst, the adsorbates, the surface reactions, and the technology of large-scale operation. The contributors to the present volume review the state of the art, the science, and the technology; they reveal existing lacunae, and suggest ways forward. Around the turn of the century, Sabatier's school was extending the descriptive catalytic chemistry of hydrogenation by metals to include almost all types of multiple bond. The triple bond of dinitrogen, which continued to be more resistant than the somewhat similar bonds in carbon monoxide and ethyne, defied their efforts.

Atlas of Zeolite Framework Types
Author: Ch. Baerlocher
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080554342
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 405
Book Description
Zeolite scientists, whether they are working in synthesis, catalysis, characterization or application development, use the Atlas of Zeolite Framework Types as a reference. It describes the main features of all of the confirmed zeolite framework structures, and gives references to the relevant primary structural literature. Since the last edition 34 more framwork types have been approved and are described in this new edition. A further new feature will be that characteristic building units will be listed for each of the framework types.Zeolites and their analogs are used as desiccants, as water softeners, as shape-selective acid catalysts, as molecular sieves, as concentrators of radioactive isotopes, as blood clotting agents, and even as additives to animal feeds. Recently, their suitability as hosts for nanometer spacing of atomic clusters has also been demonstrated. These diverse applications are a reflection of the fascinating structures of these microporous materials. Each time a new zeolite framework structure is reported, it is examined by the Structure Commission of the International Zeolite Association (IZA-SC), and if it is found to be unique and to conform to the IZA-SC's definition of a zeolite, it is assigned a 3-letter framework type code. This code is part of the official IUPAC nomenclature for microporous materials. The Atlas of Zeolite Framework Types is essentially a compilation of data for each of these confirmed framework types. These data include a stereo drawing showing the framework connectivity, features that characterize the idealized framework structure, a list of materials with this framework type, information on the type material that was used to establish the framework type, and stereo drawings of the pore openings of the type material. - Clear stereo drawings of each of the framework types - Description of the features of the framework type, allowing readers to quickly see if the framework type is suitable to their needs - References to isotypic materials, readers can quickly identify related materials and consult the appropriate reference
